E04

Pentair Pool Heater

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

E04 on a Pentair pool heater means the high-limit safety switch has tripped — water temperature exceeded the safe limit, usually due to low flow. Confirm the pump is running and the filter is clean. Allow to cool, press Reset, and the heater should restart.

Affected Models

  • Pentair MasterTemp 250
  • Pentair MasterTemp 400
  • Pentair MasterTemp HD
  • Pentair UltraTemp
  • Pentair ETi 400

Common Causes

  • Pump turned off while the heater was firing
  • Filter clogged, restricting water flow through the heater
  • Closed valves in the heater plumbing reducing flow rate
  • Failed flow switch giving false 'flow OK' reading
  • Failed high-limit switch (rarely — usually the cause is real over-temperature)

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the pool pump is running.

Walk to the pump and listen for it operating. Confirm water is moving through the return jets in the pool. The heater is interlocked with flow — if the pump stops while the heater is firing, water in the heat exchanger boils and trips E04.

  2. Check the filter pressure.

On the filter pressure gauge, the reading should be within 10 PSI of the clean-filter baseline. If pressure is much higher, backwash (sand filter) or clean (cartridge filter) before retrying the heater.

  3. Verify all valves are open.

Inspect the valves on the heater inlet and outlet plumbing. Solar panels or bypass valves left in the wrong position can drastically reduce flow through the heater.

  4. Allow the heater to cool.

After resolving the flow issue, leave the system running with the heater off for 10 minutes. This allows the heat exchanger to return to pool water temperature.

  5. Press Reset on the heater.

On most Pentair MasterTemp models the Reset button is on the front panel. Press once. The display should clear E04 and return to the normal idle state.

When to Call a Professional

Repeated E04 after confirmed normal flow points to internal heater issues (heat exchanger fouling, gas valve issue) — book a Pentair service technician.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between Pentair E04, E05, and E06?

E04 is the high-limit safety trip (over-temperature). E05 and E06 indicate ignition failures — the burner failed to light or the flame was lost. The cause and fix differ. E04 is flow-related; E05/E06 are gas/ignition-related.

Can I damage my Pentair heater by repeatedly resetting E04?

Yes — if the underlying low-flow issue is not fixed, repeated firing under low flow can permanently damage the heat exchanger. Always resolve the cause before pressing Reset. A heat exchanger replacement costs USD 800–1,500.
