E10
Pentair Pool Heater
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E10 on a Pentair pool heater means the flow switch is not detecting water moving through the heater. Confirm the pump is on and primed. Check the filter is clean and the bypass valves are correctly set. Persistent E10 often means a stuck flow switch.
Affected Models
- Pentair MasterTemp 250
- Pentair MasterTemp 400
- Pentair MasterTemp HD
- Pentair UltraTemp
- Pentair ETi 400
Common Causes
- Pump turned off or not yet primed after winterising
- Filter clogged and blocking flow to the heater
- Heater bypass valve closed, sending water around the heater
- Air trapped in the pump basket preventing prime
- Stuck or failed flow switch in the heater inlet
How to Fix It
-
Confirm the pump is running and primed.
Look at the pump basket — water should be visibly moving and the basket should be full. If the basket is half-empty (air gap), the pump has lost prime — refill, close the lid, and restart.
-
Check the filter pressure gauge.
Pressure should be within 10 PSI of the clean baseline. High pressure means a clogged filter — backwash (sand) or clean (cartridge) before retrying the heater.
-
Verify all valves are open.
Trace the plumbing from pump to heater. Confirm every valve is in the correct position. Solar bypass and heater bypass valves are common culprits — they can be closed during off-season.
-
Test the flow switch.
If pump flow is confirmed normal but E10 persists, the flow switch inside the heater inlet may be stuck. Tap the switch housing gently with a wrench — sometimes this frees a stuck reed switch. Persistent E10 with confirmed flow needs a flow switch replacement.
-
Book service for switch replacement.
Pentair flow switches (Part 471652) cost roughly USD 60–90 plus labour. A pool tech can swap one in under 30 minutes.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does E10 happen after I open the pool for the season?
Spring-opening E10 is almost always a prime issue or a bypass valve left in the winter position. Verify the pump is fully primed (basket full of water) and all valves point to summer operation.
Can a flow switch fail without warning?
Yes — flow switches use a small reed contact that can fail closed (heater fires with no flow — dangerous) or fail open (E10 with confirmed flow). Pentair's E10 is the safe failure mode. Replace promptly to restore heater operation.
