Communication Error / No Communication
Zodiac / Jandy Pool Equipment
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
A communication error on Zodiac/Jandy equipment means one device on the RS-485 data bus is not responding to the main controller. Check that the 4-pin data cable between the main panel and the affected device is seated correctly. A failed sub-device, bad cable, or duplicate RS-485 address can also cut communication.
Affected Models
- Jandy AquaLink RS
- Jandy RS16 Controller
- Jandy iAquaLink 2.0
- Zodiac AquaPure
- Jandy JXi Heater
- Jandy VS FloPro Pump
Common Causes
- Loose or corroded 4-pin RS-485 data cable at the main panel or sub-device
- Failed sub-device (pump, heater, salt cell) not responding on the data bus
- Duplicate RS-485 address — two devices set to the same device number
- Lightning or surge damage to the communication board
- Too many devices on the RS-485 bus without a line terminator
How to Fix It
-
Identify the device reporting a communication fault.
On the AquaLink RS panel or keypad, note which device shows a communication fault. Each device (pump, heater, salt cell) communicates separately on the RS-485 bus. Knowing which device is not responding narrows the diagnostic to that cable run and device.
-
Inspect the RS-485 data cable connection.
The 4-pin RS-485 cable runs from the main control panel to each sub-device. At both the panel and the device end, check that the plug is fully seated and the connector pins are not corroded or bent. Unplug and re-seat the connector firmly.
-
Check for duplicate RS-485 address settings.
Each Jandy sub-device has a DIP switch or address setting on the board. If two devices share the same address, both will go offline. Consult the device manual for the correct address switch position and verify each device has a unique address.
-
Power cycle the entire equipment pad.
Shut off the equipment pad breaker for 60 seconds, then restore power. Allow 2–3 minutes for all devices to boot and re-establish RS-485 communication. Sometimes a bus collision clears only with a full power cycle.
-
Replace the RS-485 cable if damaged.
UV and moisture exposure can degrade the data cable over time. If the cable shows cracking, rodent damage, or corrosion at any junction, replace it with an equivalent 4-conductor shielded cable. Keep cable runs as short as practical to reduce communication errors.
When to Call a Professional
If wiring checks out and the communication error persists to a single device, that device's communication board likely needs replacement. Contact Jandy service or an authorised pool equipment technician.
