FL
Frigidaire Portable Air Conditioner
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Frigidaire Portable AC FL means the internal condensate collection tank has reached its maximum capacity and the unit has paused cooling to prevent overflow. Drain the tank through the drain port at the rear or side of the unit to clear the code. In very humid climates, setting up continuous drainage through a hose to a floor drain eliminates repeated FL stops.

Common Causes
- High humidity in the room causes the unit to collect large amounts of condensation quickly
- The unit has been running for a long time without a drain check
- Continuous drain hose is not connected — the unit is relying on the internal tank only
- The drain hose is connected but kinked or elevated above the drain port, preventing water from flowing out
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the unit and prepare a shallow pan or towels
Power off the AC using the power button before draining. Place a shallow container or thick towels under the drain port at the lower rear or side of the unit — collected water may be 1–2 litres depending on how long the FL was pending.
-
Remove the drain plug and drain the collected water
Locate the drain port on the rear or lower side of the unit. Remove the rubber drain plug (or unscrew the drain cap) and allow water to flow out into your container. Tilt the unit slightly toward the drain if water flow slows — residual water collects at the bottom.
-
Reinsert the drain plug firmly before restarting
Once drained, push the rubber plug firmly back into the drain port until it seats fully. A loose drain plug will allow water to leak onto your floor during the next run. Power the unit back on — the FL code should clear and cooling will resume automatically.
-
Set up continuous drainage if FL recurs frequently
Frigidaire portable ACs have a continuous drain port (separate from the manual drain) that accepts a standard garden hose or drain hose. Connect a hose and route it to a floor drain, sink, or outdoors. Continuous drainage eliminates the need to manually drain and prevents FL stops in humid conditions.
-
Check that a continuous drain hose is not kinked or elevated
If you already have a drain hose attached and FL still triggers, check the hose for kinks, sharp bends, or sections routed uphill. The hose must run continuously downward from the drain port to the drainage point — any uphill section creates a trap that stops water from flowing.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often will I need to drain a Frigidaire portable AC in a humid climate?
In very humid conditions (above 60% relative humidity), some portable ACs fill their internal tanks in 6–12 hours of continuous operation. In moderate conditions, drainage may only be needed every 24–48 hours. Setting up continuous drainage is strongly recommended in humid climates to avoid regular FL stops.
Can I tilt the unit to drain it more completely?
Yes — carefully tilting the unit toward the drain port helps collect the last of the pooled water. Always power off and unplug before tilting. Do not tilt more than 45 degrees or leave the unit tilted — the compressor oil can migrate and damage the compressor if the unit runs on its side.
