E3

Honeywell Portable Air Conditioner

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

E3 on a Honeywell portable AC means the compressor protection circuit has triggered — usually due to overheating from low refrigerant, blocked exhaust, or excessive ambient temperature. The unit shuts down to protect the compressor. Address airflow and ambient before suspecting a leak.

Affected Models

  • Honeywell HPC10AESWK
  • Honeywell HL14CESWK
  • Honeywell MM14CCS
  • Honeywell HF Series
  • Honeywell MN Series

Common Causes

  • Exhaust hose kinked or extension too long
  • Indoor coil airflow blocked by dirty filter
  • Low refrigerant from a slow leak
  • Ambient temperature above the unit's rated range (35°C+)
  • Failed compressor capacitor

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and let the unit cool for 30 minutes.

E3 is a thermal protection event. The compressor needs full cooling before restart. Forcing restart while still hot can damage the compressor.

  2. Clean the air filter.

Open the air filter slot and rinse with warm soapy water. Air-dry. A clogged filter is the leading cause of repeat E3. Clean every 2–4 weeks during heavy use.

  3. Inspect the exhaust hose.

Confirm the hose runs in a straight line with minimum bends. Length should not exceed 1.5 m (5 ft) on most Honeywell portables. Kinks and bends restrict airflow and trigger E3 in hot weather.

  4. Lower the room load.

Close blinds against direct sun and turn off heat-generating appliances when running the AC. If ambient is above 35°C, the AC may struggle even when working — wait for cooler conditions or supplement with another AC.

  5. Book service for compressor or refrigerant inspection.

Persistent E3 with confirmed clean filter and clear exhaust suggests low refrigerant or compressor capacitor failure. Service costs USD 100–250 for diagnosis. Refrigerant repair USD 200–400 if a leak is found.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Honeywell AC get E3 in the afternoon?

Afternoon is hottest — high ambient stresses portable ACs the most. A unit that works in mild conditions may hit E3 in the afternoon if the filter is even slightly clogged or exhaust is even slightly kinked. Pre-summer maintenance prevents most events.

Is E3 covered under warranty?

E3 from a manufacturing defect (failed capacitor, refrigerant leak from new) is covered under Honeywell's 1-year warranty. E3 from user maintenance issues (dirty filter, blocked exhaust) is generally not. Document the symptoms before contacting support.
