FL
Whynter Portable Air Conditioner
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Whynter Portable AC FL means the internal condensate water tank has reached its maximum capacity. The unit stops cooling automatically to prevent overflow. Empty the tank through the lower drain port at the back of the unit, then restart. Setting up a continuous drain hose eliminates repeated FL stops in humid environments.
Affected Models
- Whynter ARC-14SH
- Whynter ARC-14S
- Whynter ARC-110WD
- Whynter ARC-12SDH
- Whynter ARC-131GD
Common Causes
- High room humidity is causing the unit to collect condensate faster than expected
- The unit has been running for a long time without a drain check in a humid climate
- Continuous drain hose is not connected and the unit is relying on the internal tank only
- The continuous drain hose is connected but blocked, kinked, or running uphill
How to Fix It
-
Turn off the unit and place a container under the drain port
Press the power button to turn off the unit. Move it slightly away from the wall. The drain port is at the lower rear. Place a shallow pan or set of towels underneath — the tank may hold up to 2 litres depending on how long the FL was pending.
-
Open the drain cap and empty the collected water
Unscrew or pull out the drain plug. Water will flow out steadily. Gently tilt the unit toward the drain port to help collect the remaining water at the bottom. Empty your container if needed before all the water has drained.
-
Reinsert the drain cap firmly and power the unit back on
Push the drain cap all the way back in until it seats firmly. A loose cap will drip water onto the floor during the next run. Power the unit back on — the FL code clears automatically once the drain cap is in and the unit is restarted.
-
Connect a continuous drain hose to avoid recurring FL stops
All Whynter portable ACs have a continuous drain port (a separate threaded fitting, usually above the manual drain). Attach a standard drain hose or garden hose and route it to a floor drain, bucket, or outdoors. The unit will drain passively and continuously, preventing the tank from filling.
-
Check that the continuous drain hose runs downhill without kinks
If you already have a drain hose and FL still triggers, inspect the hose for kinks, clogs, or uphill sections. The hose must slope continuously downward from the drain port to the exit point. Even a small uphill loop creates a water trap that blocks drainage.
Frequently Asked Questions
How quickly does the tank fill in a humid room?
In rooms with 60–80% relative humidity, a Whynter portable AC can fill its internal tank in 8–16 hours of continuous operation. In especially humid conditions (post-storm, coastal summer), the tank may fill in under 4 hours. Continuous drainage is the practical solution for humid climates.
Is Whynter's self-evaporating mode the same as other brands?
Whynter ARC series models include a self-evaporating mode that re-uses collected condensate to cool the condenser coil, evaporating most moisture out through the exhaust hose. This significantly reduces how often the tank needs draining. However, in very humid conditions, the evaporation rate cannot keep up with collection, and FL will still eventually appear.
