Charger Flashing Red

Ryobi Power Tool

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A flashing red LED on a Ryobi charger (without alternating green) means the battery is outside the safe charging temperature window — usually 5–45°C (40–115°F).
Take the battery out, bring it to room temperature for 20–30 minutes, and try again.
This is the most common Ryobi LED pattern in summer (battery too hot) or winter (battery too cold).

Affected Models

  • Ryobi 18V One+ system
  • Ryobi P118 Charger
  • Ryobi OP401 Charger
  • Ryobi 40V Battery System
  • Ryobi Compact Battery

Common Causes

  • Battery overheated from heavy use right before charging (most common)
  • Battery stored in a cold garage or vehicle below 5°C
  • Battery used in direct sunlight on a hot day
  • Charger placed in direct sunlight, heating the battery passively
  • Battery temperature sensor failed — reads incorrectly (uncommon)

How to Fix It

  1. Take the battery off the charger.

Slide the battery out and feel it.
Warm is fine; hot to the touch is too hot to charge safely.
Cold from a winter garage will also trip flashing red — Ryobi's lithium batteries don't like to charge below 5°C.

  2. Let the battery reach room temperature.

20–30 minutes on a flat surface, indoors, away from direct sunlight or heat sources.
Don't try to speed it up by putting it in a fridge — temperature shock causes condensation inside, which is worse than waiting.

  3. Or warm a cold battery.

If the battery came from a cold space, bring it indoors and let it sit for 30–45 minutes.
Charging a cold lithium battery is exactly what the protection circuit is preventing — forcing it would damage the cells permanently.

  4. Move the charger to a cooler spot.

If your charger sits in a hot garage in summer, the battery never has a chance to cool down properly between charging cycles.
Move the charger to a cooler indoor location for the warm months — the battery lasts longer and charging is faster.

  5. Re-dock the battery.

Once at room temperature, slide it back on the charger.
The LED should switch to steady red (charging) within seconds.
If it stays flashing red, the temperature sensor in the battery has failed — and that battery needs replacing.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I cool a hot Ryobi battery faster?

Just give it air.
Don't put it in a fridge or freezer — temperature shock causes condensation inside the cells, which leads to corrosion over time.
Open air on a hardwood or concrete surface is fastest.
15–20 minutes is usually enough.

Why does flashing red look the same as 'defective'?

It doesn't, but they're easy to confuse.
Flashing red alone = temperature.
Flashing red AND green alternating = defect.
Pay attention to whether the LED is doing one colour only, or alternating between two — that's the difference between a 30-minute wait and a new battery.
