Tool Not Running

Ryobi Power Tool

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

If a charged Ryobi battery doesn't run the tool, the most common causes are dirty contacts on the tool or battery, the battery not fully clicked into place, or the tool's safety switch not engaged.
Pull the battery, wipe the contacts on both sides, click the battery firmly back in until it locks, and try again.
That fixes most no-start cases.

Affected Models

  • Ryobi 18V One+ Drill
  • Ryobi P251 Impact Driver
  • Ryobi P523 Jigsaw
  • Ryobi P507 Circular Saw
  • Ryobi One+ system

Common Causes

  • Battery not fully clicked into the tool's port
  • Contacts on tool or battery dirty (sawdust is the worst offender)
  • Trigger lockout switch engaged
  • Battery low — tool won't start at very low voltage
  • Tool itself faulty (uncommon — usually with visible damage)

How to Fix It

  1. Click the battery in until it locks.

Slide the battery into the tool firmly until you hear or feel a click.
It should not wiggle when seated.
A battery that's only halfway in won't make full electrical contact and the tool reads it as no battery.

  2. Wipe the contacts on both sides.

Pull the battery out and wipe the metal contacts on both the battery and inside the tool's battery port.
Sawdust is conductive but unevenly so — it's the leading cause of intermittent connection.
A dry cloth or compressed air clears it.

  3. Check the lockout switch.

Most Ryobi One+ tools have a small switch above the trigger that locks the trigger to prevent accidental starts.
Slide it to the unlocked position.
If the lockout is engaged, the trigger feels normal but nothing happens when squeezed.

  4. Check the battery charge.

Press the fuel-gauge button on the battery (if it has one).
Less than one bar = too low to start most tools.
Even a partially-charged battery may not have enough voltage for the tool to start, especially on high-load tools like circular saws.

  5. Try a different Ryobi battery.

If you have another Ryobi One+ battery, swap it in.
Different battery starts the tool = original battery is the issue (could be aged out or have cell damage).
Different battery also doesn't start = the tool itself has failed.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my Ryobi tool work in cold weather but not on hot days?

Heat triggers the tool's thermal protection — a different circuit from the battery.
If you've been using the tool hard in summer, let it rest for 10 minutes.
The tool won't restart while it's overheated, even with a fresh battery.

Can a tool start partially — like the LED comes on but the motor doesn't run?

Yes, and it usually means the battery has just enough power to wake the electronics but not enough to spin the motor.
Charge the battery and try again.
If a fully charged battery has the same symptom, the tool's motor or its driver has failed.
