Self-Test Failed

Advice UPS (Uninterruptible Power Supply)

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Self-Test Failed means the UPS briefly switched to battery power to test it, and the battery could not maintain adequate output voltage under load. The UPS is telling you the battery is no longer reliable for real backup use. Allow a full charge and run the test again — if it fails twice, replace the battery.

Affected Models

  • Advice UPS Line-Interactive Series
  • Advice UPS Online Series
  • Advice UPS (all models with self-test function)

Common Causes

  • Battery capacity degraded below the minimum threshold for the self-test load
  • Battery not fully charged when the test ran — test requires a full charge to pass
  • Battery deeply discharged recently and not yet recovered
  • Loose battery terminal causing a voltage drop under load

How to Fix It

  1. Leave the UPS connected to mains power for 24 hours to fully charge the battery, then run the self-test again manually (hold the test button for 3 seconds or press the test button if present).

A self-test run immediately after a power cut or after the battery was discharged may fail simply because the battery is not fully charged yet.

  2. Open the battery compartment and check that the battery terminals are firmly connected. A loose connection causes a voltage drop under the test load.

Disconnect the UPS from mains before opening the battery compartment. Press the battery connectors firmly and reseat the battery if it has shifted.

  3. If the test continues to fail after a full charge and the battery is over 3 years old, replace the battery. Do not rely on a battery that fails self-tests to protect your equipment.

A self-test failure is an advance warning — the battery will fail during the next real power cut. Replace it before that happens.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often does the Advice UPS run a self-test?

Most Advice UPS models run an automatic self-test every 14 days or at startup. You can also trigger a manual test by pressing the test button. Consistent failures over multiple test cycles confirm the battery needs replacement.
