High Temperature

APC UPS

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

APC UPS High Temperature means the internal temperature has exceeded the safe operating threshold. The UPS will continue to operate but battery life is significantly reduced at elevated temperatures. Improve ventilation around the unit and reduce the ambient room temperature if possible.

Affected Models

  • APC Smart-UPS SMT and SMX series
  • APC Back-UPS Pro series
  • APC Symmetra series
  • APC Easy-UPS series

Common Causes

  • UPS installed in a closed cabinet or server rack without adequate airflow
  • Ambient room temperature above 25°C — the recommended operating temperature for lead-acid batteries
  • Ventilation slots on the UPS blocked by cables, dust, or equipment placed too close
  • UPS running at high load for extended periods, generating more internal heat
  • Blocked or failed internal cooling fan on Smart-UPS models

How to Fix It

  1. Ensure there is at least 10 cm of clearance on all sides of the UPS.

Do not place the UPS inside a fully enclosed cabinet without ventilation. Hot air must be able to escape from the top and back. If rack-mounted, ensure the rack has front-to-back airflow and the UPS is not blocked by a door.

  2. Check the ambient room temperature.

Sealed lead-acid batteries operate optimally at 20–25°C. Every 10°C rise above 25°C halves the battery's service life and can trigger temperature alarms. Aim to keep the UPS in an air-conditioned room.

  3. Vacuum the ventilation slots.

Dust accumulation on the ventilation grilles significantly reduces airflow. With the UPS powered on, use a can of compressed air or a vacuum to clean the intake and exhaust grilles.

  4. Listen for the internal fan on Smart-UPS models.

Smart-UPS units have an internal cooling fan that should spin up under load or when temperature rises. If you cannot hear the fan running when the UPS is under load and warm, the fan may have failed and needs replacement.

  5. Reduce the load on the UPS.

A UPS running near its rated capacity generates significantly more heat than one running at 50% load. Remove any non-critical equipment from the battery-backed outlets to reduce heat output.

When to Call a Professional

If the High Temperature alarm persists after improving ventilation and the room is below 25°C, the internal temperature sensor or cooling fan may have failed. Contact APC support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does high temperature damage my APC UPS battery?

Yes. For every 10°C above 25°C, the expected battery life is halved. A UPS that normally needs a battery replacement every 5 years may need one every 2.5 years if kept in a warm room.

What temperature range is safe for an APC UPS?

APC specifies an operating range of 0–40°C, but recommends 20–25°C for maximum battery life. Storage temperature range is -15°C to 45°C.
