Replace Battery
APC UPS
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
The Replace Battery warning on an APC UPS means the sealed lead-acid battery inside has degraded below the threshold needed for reliable backup power. The UPS will continue to condition power and protect against surges, but it will not supply battery power during a mains failure. The battery must be replaced — APC replacement batteries are available by model number from APC and third-party suppliers.
Affected Models
- APC Back-UPS series (BE, BX, BVX)
- APC Back-UPS Pro series (BR, BN)
- APC Smart-UPS series (SUA, SMT, SMX)
- APC Easy-UPS series
Common Causes
- Battery has reached end of service life — sealed lead-acid batteries typically last 3–5 years
- Battery deeply discharged during a long power outage and failed to recover
- High ambient temperature accelerating battery degradation — heat above 25°C shortens battery life significantly
- Battery stored unused for a long period and sulfated
- Internal cell failure — one cell shorted or dried out
How to Fix It
-
Note your UPS model number (printed on the label on the bottom or back of the unit) and look up the correct replacement battery cartridge on the APC website.
APC uses model-specific RBC (Replacement Battery Cartridge) numbers. Searching your model number on the APC site shows exactly which RBC you need.
-
Power down the equipment connected to the UPS and disconnect the UPS from the wall outlet before opening the battery compartment.
The battery compartment is usually on the front or side of the unit and is secured by a single screw or clip. The battery is connected by spade terminals — no soldering required.
-
Disconnect the old battery terminals (note which wire goes to which terminal), remove the old battery, and slide in the new one. Reconnect the terminals securely.
The red wire connects to the positive (+) terminal and the black wire to the negative (-) terminal. Reverse polarity will damage the UPS — double-check before closing the compartment.
-
Reconnect the UPS to mains power and allow it to charge for at least 8 hours before the Replace Battery indicator clears.
The indicator may not clear until the UPS has completed a self-test after sufficient charging. Press the self-test button (hold the power button for 3 seconds on most models) to trigger a test after charging.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long do APC UPS batteries last?
Typically 3–5 years under normal conditions. Heat is the biggest enemy — every 10°C above 25°C roughly halves battery life. APC recommends proactive replacement every 3 years in warm environments and every 5 years in cool, stable environments.
Can I use a non-APC replacement battery?
Yes — third-party sealed lead-acid batteries that match the exact voltage and Ah rating work fine. Verify the physical dimensions also match, as some UPS models have tight battery compartments. Avoid very cheap no-name batteries, which can have poor capacity and shorter service life.
