Communication Lost / UPS Not Detected by PowerPanel
CyberPower UPS
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
CyberPower 'Communication Lost' means PowerPanel software has lost contact with the UPS, almost always due to a disconnected or faulty USB cable, the wrong cable type, or a PowerPanel service not running. Check the USB cable connection and restart the PowerPanel service.
Affected Models
- CyberPower CP600LCD
- CyberPower CP850PFCLCD
- CyberPower CP1350PFCLCD
- CyberPower CP1500AVRLCD
- All CyberPower UPS models with USB or serial port
Common Causes
- USB cable disconnected or only partially inserted
- Wrong USB cable — requires USB-A to USB-B, not a charging-only or USB-C cable
- PowerPanel service stopped or crashed — the background service handles UPS communication
- USB port on PC in power-saving sleep state — USB power management cut the connection
- Driver conflict after a Windows update
How to Fix It
-
Check the USB cable on both ends.
Disconnect and firmly reconnect the USB cable at the UPS and at the PC. Look for a secure click or resistance — a loose USB-B connector at the UPS end is the most common cause of Communication Lost. Try a different USB port on your PC, preferably a rear motherboard port rather than a front-panel port.
-
Confirm you are using the correct cable type.
CyberPower UPS units require a USB-A to USB-B cable — identical to a standard printer cable. A USB charging cable or USB-C cable will not establish data communication. The cable that shipped with the UPS is the correct type — if it is lost, use any USB-A to USB-B printer cable.
-
Restart the PowerPanel service.
On Windows, open Services (press Win+R, type services.msc). Find CyberPower PowerPanel Service, right-click, and choose Restart. If the service is stopped, start it. Wait 30 seconds after restarting the service for communication to re-establish.
-
Disable USB selective suspend for the UPS port.
Windows USB power management can put UPS HID ports to sleep, breaking communication. In Device Manager, find the CyberPower UPS under Human Interface Devices. Right-click → Properties → Power Management → uncheck Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
-
Reinstall PowerPanel.
Uninstall PowerPanel from Windows Settings → Apps. Download the latest version from cyberpower.com. Install it fresh and connect the USB cable when prompted during setup. After installation, confirm the PowerPanel service is running and shows the UPS connected.
When to Call a Professional
If communication cannot be restored after trying a different cable, different USB port, and reinstalling PowerPanel, the UPS communication port may have failed. Contact CyberPower support.
