C1
Instant Pot Pressure Cooker
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
C1 means the bottom temperature sensor circuit is open — the wire between the sensor and the controller is broken or disconnected.
This isn't user-repairable on most Instant Pot models.
Unplug, wait 10 minutes, plug back in and try again.
If C1 persists, the unit needs warranty replacement (under warranty) or factory service.
Don't try to disassemble — the sensor lives near hot components.
Affected Models
- Instant Pot Duo
- Instant Pot Duo Plus
- Instant Pot Ultra
- Instant Pot Pro
- Instant Pot Smart
Common Causes
- Bottom temperature sensor wire broken (most common)
- Sensor itself failed (open thermistor)
- Connector loose between sensor harness and main board
- Internal harness damage from rough handling
- Controller's sensor input damaged
How to Fix It
-
Unplug for 10 minutes.
Pull the power cord from the wall.
Wait 10 full minutes — capacitors take time to discharge.
Plug back in.
This power cycle clears transient C1 events.
If C1 doesn't return when you start a cooking program, you're done. -
Try a different program.
Some C1 events appear with one program but not another.
Try Pressure Cook on low pressure, or Sauté on the lowest setting.
If only certain programs trigger C1, that suggests the issue is in a specific control path — note this for warranty support. -
Check the inner pot.
Make sure the inner stainless pot is properly seated in the cooker.
Some Instant Pots use a sensor that detects pot presence — without it, you may see C1 or related codes.
Lift and reset the pot, ensure it sits flat on the bottom heating plate. -
Don't disassemble the unit.
The temperature sensor and its wiring are deep inside the cooker, near the heating element.
Disassembling means voiding warranty and risking damage to a sealed pressure vessel.
This is genuinely a manufacturer-service or replace-under-warranty situation. -
Contact Instant Brands support.
Open a support ticket at Instant Brands' website with your model number and the C1 code.
If under the 1-year warranty, they'll typically send a replacement unit.
Out of warranty, the unit is usually beyond economical repair — Instant Pots are 100–200 USD new and repair labor exceeds that.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will I lose food cooking when C1 appears?
If C1 triggers mid-cook, the unit shuts off and what's inside stops cooking.
For pressure-cooked food: the pressure will release naturally and food may be undercooked.
For slow cook: food may be salvageable if you transfer to another pot.
Don't pressurize a unit showing C1 — temperature control is unreliable.
Is C1 covered under warranty?
Yes, on units within their 1-year limited warranty.
Instant Brands typically replaces rather than repairs.
Have your purchase receipt ready when contacting support — proof of purchase date determines coverage.
Out of warranty, replacement is usually more economical than repair.
