Lid

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

The Lid error means the unit can't detect the lid in the right position for the program you're trying to run.
For pressure cooking, the lid must be locked closed with the steam release set to Sealing.
For slow cook or sauté, the lid must be off (or in slow-cook position).
Check your program's required lid state — most Lid errors are user error, not a fault.

Affected Models

  • Instant Pot Duo
  • Instant Pot Duo Plus
  • Instant Pot Ultra
  • Instant Pot Pro
  • Instant Pot Smart

Common Causes

  • Lid not fully closed and locked for pressure cooking
  • Steam release valve not set to Sealing
  • Slow cook program running with the lid in pressure-lock position
  • Lid sensor magnet missing or moved
  • Lid position sensor failed (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Identify which program you're running.

    Look at the touchscreen display.
Pressure Cook, Manual, Soup/Broth — these need the lid locked closed with steam release on Sealing.
Slow Cook, Sauté, Yogurt — these need the lid off or set to a different position.
Make sure you have the right combination.

  2. For pressure cooking: lock the lid.

Place the lid on top of the pot and rotate it clockwise until you hear a click.
The lid should be fully locked.
If the icon on the display shows an open lock, the lid isn't locked — rotate further until you hear the click.

  3. Set the steam release to Sealing.

On older models, the steam release knob has Sealing and Venting positions — rotate to Sealing.
On newer models (Pro, Ultra), the seal is automatic when the lid locks.
Check your manual for your model's procedure.

  4. Check the float valve.

Look at the small valve next to the steam release — it should be down before starting.
    It rises when pressure builds.
If it's stuck up at startup, that's why Lid error appears.
Push it down with your finger (when cool) and check it moves freely.

  5. Power-cycle if Lid error persists.

Unplug the unit for 5 minutes, plug back in, try again.
If the lid is correctly positioned and Lid error still shows, the lid sensor itself may have failed.
Contact Instant Brands support — under warranty they'll replace the unit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can the rubber sealing ring cause Lid error?

Indirectly, yes — if the sealing ring is missing, twisted, or improperly seated in the lid, the lid won't seal correctly even when locked.
The unit can still detect the lock, but pressure won't build, and some models report Lid as a result.
Make sure the sealing ring is in place and lying flat in its groove.

Why doesn't my lid lock click?

If you don't hear a click when rotating the lid, either the lock mechanism is dirty (food residue) or the lid is on the wrong way around.
Look for the alignment arrows on the lid and pot — they should line up before rotating.
If still no click, clean the locking mechanism and try again.
