E1

Kärcher Pressure Washer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E1 means the pump overheated and the thermal cutout tripped. This usually happens when the trigger is released and the machine idles — hot water recirculates through the pump rapidly. Switch off and allow 15–20 minutes to cool.

Affected Models

  • Kärcher K2
  • Kärcher K3
  • Kärcher K4
  • Kärcher K5
  • Kärcher K7

Common Causes

  • Trigger released for too long while motor keeps running
  • Hot water supply used on a cold-water model
  • Blocked or restricted water inlet reducing flow
  • Extended use in very high ambient temperature

How to Fix It

  1. Switch off and unplug immediately.

Do not keep restarting while hot. Unplug completely and allow the pump to cool — the thermal cutout is self-resetting once temperature drops.

  2. Wait 15–20 minutes in a cool spot.

Move the machine to shade if possible. The cutout resets automatically — there is no button to press.

  3. Check how long the trigger was released.

When idling with the trigger off, Kärcher pumps recirculate hot water internally and overheat within 30–60 seconds. Always switch off between tasks rather than leaving the machine idling.

  4. Check the water inlet filter.

Remove the garden hose at the inlet and rinse the small filter screen. A restricted inlet reduces cooling water flow and speeds up overheating.

  5. Restart and keep the trigger pressed.

After cooling, restart and use continuously. If E1 returns within seconds, the thermal cutout switch may be faulty and needs service.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I reset E1 on a Kärcher?

E1 resets automatically after cooling — simply switch off, wait 15–20 minutes, and restart. There is no separate reset button on consumer K-series models.

Can E1 permanently damage my Kärcher pressure washer?

Occasional E1 events cause no lasting damage — that is what the cutout prevents. Chronic idling accelerates pump seal wear over time.

My Kärcher shows E1 within seconds of starting every time — why?

Immediate E1 on every start usually means the thermal cutout switch is stuck open or the motor has sustained heat damage. If full cooling does not help, the machine needs a service centre assessment.
