E2

Sun Joe Pressure Washer

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E2 on a Sun Joe means the pump is not receiving enough water. Stop immediately — running dry damages pump seals quickly. Check for a kinked hose, blocked inlet filter, or a supply tap that is not fully open.

Affected Models

  • Sun Joe SPX3000
  • Sun Joe SPX3500
  • Sun Joe SPX4001
  • Sun Joe SPX4600
  • Sun Joe SPX9006-PRO

Common Causes

  • Garden hose kinked or too narrow in diameter
  • Inlet filter screen blocked with sediment
  • Supply tap not fully open
  • Water supply pressure too low
  • Air trapped in the pump from a previous dry run

How to Fix It

  1. Stop the machine immediately.

Running the pump dry even briefly damages the internal seals. Do not continue when E2 is shown.

  2. Clean the inlet filter.

Disconnect the garden hose at the machine inlet and remove the small mesh filter screen. Rinse it under tap water to remove any debris or sediment.

  3. Check the garden hose.

Use at least a 1/2-inch internal diameter hose, fully unkinked from tap to machine. Narrow or kinked hoses restrict flow below what the pump requires.

  4. Fully open the supply tap.

The tap feeding the pressure washer should be turned completely open. A partially open tap reduces flow rate below the pump's minimum requirement.

  5. Purge air from the pump.

Hold the spray trigger while connecting the water hose (machine still off). This lets water fill the pump and pushes trapped air out before you start.

Frequently Asked Questions

What water flow rate does a Sun Joe pressure washer need?

Sun Joe SPX models typically require at least 1 GPM (gallons per minute) from the supply. Most household taps deliver this comfortably when fully open with a proper hose.

Will E2 damage my Sun Joe pump permanently?

Brief dry running may not cause permanent damage, but extended running without water destroys pump seals quickly. After fixing the water supply, check for leaks around the pump housing.
