E47

Canon Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Error E47 means the printer's ink cartridge access cover is open or not fully latched. The printer will not print with the cover open because it cannot guarantee the cartridges are correctly seated. Firmly close the cover until it clicks and the error will clear.

Affected Models

  • Canon PIXMA MG2522
  • Canon PIXMA MG2922
  • Canon PIXMA TR4522
  • Canon PIXMA TR4720
  • Canon PIXMA TS202

Common Causes

  • The ink cartridge cover was not pushed down firmly enough and did not latch closed
  • A cartridge was recently replaced and the cover was closed before the cartridge clicked into place
  • A small piece of paper, tape, or packaging material is caught in the cover hinge area
  • The cover's latch mechanism is worn or damaged and no longer holds the cover shut
  • The lid sensor inside the printer has become dirty or misaligned and reports the lid as open

How to Fix It

  1. Open the ink cartridge access cover completely and check that all ink cartridges are fully seated.

Each cartridge should be pushed down until it clicks. A partially inserted cartridge can prevent the cover from closing flush.

  2. Check the cover hinge area for any paper scraps, tape, or cartridge packaging that may be stuck.

Even a thin strip of packaging tape can hold the cover slightly open.

  3. Close the cover firmly and press down on it until you hear a click.

On some models you need to press both sides of the cover evenly to ensure a full latch.

  4. The error should clear automatically once the printer detects the cover is closed.

If it does not clear within a few seconds, turn the printer off and on once.

  5. If the cover appears closed but the error persists, try cleaning the area around the cover sensor with a dry cotton swab.

Ink dust near the sensor can interfere with detection.

When to Call a Professional

If the cover is physically closed but the error remains, the lid sensor may be faulty. A Canon technician can clean or replace the sensor. This is a minor repair and usually costs less than $50 at a service center.

Frequently Asked Questions

I replaced the cartridges — now E47 appears. What did I do wrong?

Most likely the cover was not latched after installing the new cartridges. Open the cover, confirm each cartridge clicks in fully, then close the cover firmly. Also remove any protective tape that came on the new cartridges — tape left on can prevent proper seating.

The cover seems closed but E47 won't go away — what next?

Turn the printer completely off and unplug it for 60 seconds. This resets the sensor readings. If the error still appears after a cold restart, the cover latch or lid sensor may need professional attention.

Is E47 the same as E04?

No — E04 means a cartridge is not installed correctly, while E47 specifically means the cover itself is open or not latched. Sometimes fixing E47 (closing the cover properly) also resolves E04 if a cartridge was not fully seated.
