Colors Wrong
Epson Printer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Wrong colors on Epson prints usually mean one colour's nozzles are partially clogged or its ink is empty, causing other colours to dominate. A nozzle check will immediately show which colour is missing. A head cleaning cycle plus a color profile check normally restores accurate colors.
Affected Models
- Epson EcoTank ET-2800
- Epson EcoTank ET-4850
- Epson WorkForce WF-2960
- Epson Expression Home XP-4200
- Epson Expression Photo XP-8700
Common Causes
- One ink colour has run out or is critically low, removing that colour from all output
- A nozzle group for one colour is clogged, skipping that colour from the print
- The wrong color profile or ICC profile is selected in the print driver
- Color management is being applied by both the application and the printer driver, causing double correction
- Third-party ink was mixed with genuine Epson ink, creating an incompatible ink chemistry in the tubes
How to Fix It
-
Print a nozzle check pattern from Epson Status Monitor > Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check.
Look for any colour that is missing or showing only partial bars — this is the colour causing the wrong-color output.
-
Check ink levels for all colours. Refill any empty EcoTank tank or replace any empty cartridge.
A colour that has run out disappears from prints, making the remaining colours produce wrong-looking output.
-
Run a head cleaning cycle targeting any colours that show gaps in the nozzle check.
Print another nozzle check after cleaning to confirm the affected colour has been restored.
-
In your print dialog, check the color management settings. Set the color profile to sRGB (for general printing) and make sure color correction is handled by either the application or the printer driver — not both.
Double color correction is a common cause of colors looking oversaturated, shifted, or wrong on otherwise good printers.
-
Run a Print Head Alignment from Maintenance > Print Head Alignment after cleaning.
Misaligned nozzle groups cause colours to print slightly offset from each other, making mixed colors look wrong.
When to Call a Professional
Persistent color problems after cleaning and color profile fixes usually indicate the print head is unevenly worn, with some nozzle groups degrading. Epson service can deep-clean or replace the print head. For photo-quality printing, this repair is worth pursuing on Expression Photo models.
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything prints in a pink/red tint — which nozzle is clogged?
A pink or red tint usually means the cyan nozzles are blocked (cyan is the opposite of red). Print a nozzle check and look for missing cyan bars. A cleaning cycle targeting cyan should clear the tint.
Colors looked fine yesterday — what changed overnight?
Nozzles can partially dry out during idle periods, especially in dry or air-conditioned environments. Printing at least one colour page per week prevents this. A quick cleaning cycle restores the nozzles.
I refilled with third-party ink and colors went wrong immediately — is it the ink?
Yes — incompatible ink formulations can displace genuine Epson ink in the tubes, causing color shifts. Flush the system with several cleaning cycles using genuine Epson ink. For best results, switch back to genuine Epson or a reputable compatible ink brand.
