Blank Pages
Epson Printer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
An Epson printer that produces blank pages almost always has clogged print head nozzles — ink has dried inside the tiny nozzles during a period of non-use. Print a nozzle check pattern to confirm which nozzles are blocked, then run a head cleaning cycle. One or two cleanings usually restore full output.
Affected Models
- Epson EcoTank ET-2800
- Epson EcoTank ET-4850
- Epson WorkForce WF-2960
- Epson Expression Home XP-4200
- Epson EcoTank ET-3850
Common Causes
- Print head nozzles have dried out during a long period of non-use
- An ink tank is empty but the printer has not displayed a low-ink warning yet
- Ink was not primed properly after refilling an EcoTank reservoir
- The wrong paper type setting causes ink to bead off without absorbing into the page
- A compatible ink refill used an ink formula that dried faster than Epson's ink in the nozzles
How to Fix It
-
Open Epson Status Monitor (Windows: system tray > Epson icon; Mac: System Settings > Printers) and print a nozzle check pattern from Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check.
The pattern shows coloured bars. Any colour with a gap or break is a clogged nozzle.
-
If nozzles are blocked, run a Cleaning cycle from Maintenance > Print Head Cleaning. Select the colours that are missing.
One cleaning cycle uses a small amount of ink. After cleaning, print the nozzle check pattern again.
-
If cleaning once does not fully restore the pattern, run one more cleaning cycle.
Do not run more than three cleaning cycles in a row without a break — excessive cleaning depletes ink and can stress the head.
-
Check ink levels and refill any empty EcoTank reservoirs or replace any empty cartridges.
After refilling EcoTank reservoirs, run a head cleaning cycle to prime the new ink into the tubes.
-
Confirm the paper type setting in your print dialog matches the paper loaded.
Printing with 'Photo Paper' settings on plain paper, or vice versa, can result in ink that does not bond to the page properly.
When to Call a Professional
If five or more head cleaning cycles fail to restore any nozzle output, the print head may be permanently clogged or damaged. Epson service centers offer print head deep-cleaning with ultrasonic equipment. This is most cost-effective on EcoTank ET-4850 or WorkForce WF-7840 class printers.
Frequently Asked Questions
The printer was working yesterday — why is it printing blank today?
Even overnight, ink can start to dry in the nozzles if the printer was switched off at the wall (rather than using its power button). Always power down using the power button — this parks the print head and caps it to prevent drying. Run a cleaning cycle to restore the nozzles.
I just refilled my EcoTank — why are pages still blank?
After refilling an empty tank, you need to run a head cleaning cycle to prime the new ink into the tubes. The printer does not automatically know the tank has been refilled. Run one cleaning cycle, wait 5 minutes, then print a test page.
How many cleaning cycles is too many?
More than three in a row risks wasting significant ink and stressing the head. If three cycles have not restored nozzle output, let the printer sit idle for 8 hours to let any dissolved ink re-wet the nozzles. Then try one more cycle.
