Not Printing
Epson Printer
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
An Epson printer that is connected but not printing usually has a stuck print queue, an offline status, empty ink, or clogged print head nozzles. Start by clearing the print queue and checking that the printer shows as Online. Most not-printing issues resolve without any hardware work.
Affected Models
- Epson EcoTank ET-2800
- Epson EcoTank ET-4850
- Epson WorkForce WF-2960
- Epson Expression Home XP-4200
- Epson EcoTank ET-3850
Common Causes
- The printer is in Offline mode and not accepting print jobs from the computer
- A failed print job is stuck at the front of the queue and is blocking all new jobs
- Ink tanks (on EcoTank) or cartridges are empty, halting all printing
- Print head nozzles are clogged from a period of non-use, producing no output
- The printer driver is outdated or was corrupted by a Windows or macOS update
- The Wi-Fi connection dropped and the printer is no longer receiving jobs
How to Fix It
-
Open the print queue on your computer (Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers > your Epson > Open print queue on Windows; System Settings > Printers on Mac) and cancel all pending jobs.
A single stuck job at the top of the queue can block all new jobs indefinitely.
-
Right-click the printer in your printer list and check that 'Use Printer Offline' is NOT selected.
Windows sometimes sets printers to Offline mode automatically when the connection is lost briefly.
-
Turn the printer off, wait 30 seconds, and turn it back on. Wait for the startup cycle to complete.
A power cycle clears the printer's job buffer and forces a fresh connection to the computer.
-
Check ink levels — in Epson Status Monitor on Windows or the printer's own panel. Refill any empty EcoTank tanks or replace empty cartridges.
Epson printers will refuse to print if any colour is completely empty on most models.
-
Run a nozzle check: in Epson Status Monitor (Windows) or Epson Printer Utility (Mac), go to Maintenance > Print Head Nozzle Check.
If any colours show as missing or broken, run a head cleaning cycle. Repeat once more if needed.
-
If the problem started after a system update, uninstall the Epson driver and reinstall it from Epson's support website.
Download the full driver package for your exact model — not just the basic driver.
When to Call a Professional
If the printer accepts jobs, makes printing sounds, and feeds paper but nothing appears, the print head nozzles may be severely clogged or the head may be damaged. Epson service centers offer print head cleaning and replacement. This is worthwhile for EcoTank models given the cost of the printer.
Frequently Asked Questions
My Epson shows as online but still won't print — why?
A stuck print job is the most common reason. Open the print queue, delete all jobs, do a printer power cycle, and resend. If it still fails, reinstall the driver.
My EcoTank has ink but still won't print — what's wrong?
Clogged nozzles are the most likely cause. Print head nozzles dry out during periods of non-use. Run a nozzle check, then one or two cleaning cycles, and test again.
Does Epson require all colours to print in black and white?
On most Epson models, all ink tanks or cartridges must be filled (or installed) to print in any colour, including black. Some models allow black-only printing with empty colour tanks — check your model's manual.
