Printing Slowly

Epson Printer

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

A slow Epson printer is almost always caused by the print quality being set too high for the job, a slow Wi-Fi connection sending data faster than the printer can process it, or the printer running a head cleaning cycle in the background. Switching to Standard or Draft quality for everyday documents, and using a direct USB connection, usually restores full speed.

Affected Models

  • Epson EcoTank ET-2800
  • Epson EcoTank ET-4850
  • Epson WorkForce WF-2960
  • Epson Expression Home XP-4200
  • Epson WorkForce WF-7840

Common Causes

  • Print quality is set to Best or Photo mode, which uses multiple slow high-resolution passes
  • The Wi-Fi signal is weak, causing data to be resent repeatedly during the job
  • The printer is running a background maintenance cycle (head cleaning or ink charging) triggered automatically
  • The computer's print spooler is processing a large or complex file slowly before sending it to the printer
  • Quiet Mode is enabled, which slows print speed to reduce noise

How to Fix It

  1. Open the print dialog and check the print quality setting. For everyday documents, select Standard or Normal quality rather than Best or Photo.

Best/Photo quality can take 5 to 10 times longer than Standard for the same page. Reserve it for actual photo printing.

  2. Check whether Quiet Mode is enabled. In Epson Status Monitor, go to Maintenance > Quiet Mode and turn it off.

Quiet Mode deliberately slows the printer to reduce noise. It is a common accidental slow-down cause.

  3. If printing over Wi-Fi, try connecting via USB cable to see if speed improves.

A weak Wi-Fi signal causes repeated data retransmission. A direct USB connection eliminates this variable.

  4. For large documents, convert the file to PDF before printing — the Epson driver processes PDFs more efficiently than many other formats.

Very large Word documents with many embedded images can take minutes to process before the first page prints.

  5. Reinstall the printer driver if slow printing started after a system update.

Download the latest full driver package from Epson's support site. Uninstall the existing driver first, restart, then install fresh.

When to Call a Professional

Slow printing is almost never a hardware fault — no professional service is needed. If print speed suddenly dropped significantly without any setting changes, reinstalling the driver often resolves it. If the printer is also showing error codes alongside slow printing, address those errors first.

Frequently Asked Questions

My EcoTank was always fast — why has it suddenly slowed down?

A common cause is an automatic maintenance cycle running in the background after a long idle period. Epson printers perform self-cleaning cycles after periods of non-use. Wait for the maintenance cycle to finish — the speed will return to normal.

Will adding more RAM to my computer speed up printing?

For large complex files, yes — more RAM helps the print spooler process jobs faster. However, the printer's own processor speed is usually the limiting factor, not the computer. Setting a lower print quality has a much bigger impact than hardware upgrades.

Is there a turbo or speed mode on Epson printers?

Draft or Economy mode is the fastest print setting — it uses less ink and makes one fast pass per line. It is not suitable for photos or important documents, but it is ideal for everyday text and internal documents.
