Cool Down

BenQ Projector

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Cool Down' is normal — the BenQ runs the cooling fan for 1-2 minutes after you press power off, to safely cool the lamp before fully shutting down.
You'll see this message during the cooling period.
Don't unplug during cool down — that can crack the hot lamp.
Wait for the message to clear (fan stops, message disappears), then it's safe to power off completely.

Affected Models

  • BenQ TH series
  • BenQ TK series
  • BenQ HT series
  • BenQ MH series
  • BenQ MS/MX series

Common Causes

  • Normal post-shutdown cooling cycle (most common)
  • Stuck cool down due to high internal temperature
  • Filter clogged extending cool down time
  • Ambient temperature high reducing cooling effectiveness
  • Cool down logic glitched (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Wait for cool down to complete.

Normal cool down: 1-3 minutes depending on model.
The fan continues running, the message displays, and the projector counts down internally.
When done, the fan stops and the message clears.
Now it's safe to unplug if needed.

  2. Don't unplug during cool down.

Hot lamps can crack from sudden temperature changes.
The cool-down mode protects the lamp from this.
If you must unplug urgently (fire risk, etc.), do so — but expect possible lamp damage.
For routine power-off, always wait for cool down to finish.

  3. If cool down extends past 5 minutes, investigate.

Most cool downs are 1-3 minutes.
If yours is 5+ minutes regularly, internal temperature is high.
Common cause: filter clogged, restricting cooling.
Clean the filter and see if cool down returns to normal duration.

  4. Check ambient temperature.

Hot rooms make cooling slower — cool down extends.
If the projector is in an unconditioned space and you've been running it on a hot day, longer cool down is expected.
Improve room ventilation or AC for shorter cool downs.

  5. Force shutdown only as last resort.

If cool down is genuinely stuck (10+ minutes, no change), hold the power button for 10 seconds to force shutdown.
    Then unplug.
Don't make this routine — only use when you've waited a long time and the cool down isn't progressing.
    Investigate the underlying cause.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is cool down really necessary?

Yes — UHE projector lamps run at extreme temperatures (600°F+) and pressures.
Sudden cooling causes thermal shock that can crack the bulb's quartz glass.
The cool-down period brings the lamp down gradually.
Skipping cool down regularly shortens lamp life and risks failure.

Can I move the projector during cool down?

Best to wait — moving with hot lamp risks damage.
UHE lamps are most fragile when hot.
Vibration during cool down can crack the bulb.
Wait for cool down to complete (just 1-3 minutes), then move safely.
It's a small wait for a long-lasting lamp.
