Filter Cleaning
BenQ Projector
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
'Filter Cleaning Needed' means the BenQ has hit its scheduled filter maintenance interval.
Power off, let cool, remove the filter (small panel on the side or back), vacuum or rinse it, and reinstall.
For washable foam filters: rinse, squeeze dry, air dry 24 hours.
Reset the filter timer in the menu after maintenance.
Don't ignore — clogged filters cause overheating.

How to Fix It
-
Power off and unplug.
Turn the projector off.
Wait for cooling cycle (1-2 minutes).
Unplug from the wall.
Wait an additional 15 minutes for internal components to cool before opening the filter compartment. -
Locate and remove the filter.
Look for a small panel on the side or back marked with vent grilles.
Slide or unclip the panel.
Behind it is the filter — a foam pad or pleated cartridge.
Pull the filter out gently. -
Clean the filter.
For dust: use a vacuum with a soft brush attachment.
For washable filters (BenQ home theater models): rinse under cool water, squeeze gently, air dry for 24 hours.
Don't reinstall a wet filter — moisture in the projector causes electronics damage. -
Replace if heavily damaged.
If the filter is torn, holes, or thoroughly discolored after several cleanings, replace.
Genuine BenQ filters: 15–30 USD.
Match part number for your model (5J.J0H05.001 etc.).
Generic filters fit and work fine for typical use. -
Reset the filter timer.
Reinstall the filter in correct orientation.
Close the access panel.
Power on the projector.
Menu → System Setup → Filter Timer → Reset.
This resets the maintenance counter to zero.
