Lamp Door Open

BenQ Projector

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Lamp Door Open' means the safety interlock detected the lamp access door isn't fully closed.
The projector won't power on the lamp until the door is sealed.
Locate the lamp door (usually on top of the projector), close it firmly, ensure the screw is tightened, and try again.
If the door is closed but the warning persists, the interlock switch may be stuck or damaged.

Affected Models

  • BenQ TH series
  • BenQ TK series
  • BenQ HT series
  • BenQ MH series

Common Causes

  • Lamp door not fully closed after recent service
  • Door retaining screw loose
  • Interlock switch stuck in 'open' position
  • Door warped from heat
  • Switch contacts dirty or corroded

How to Fix It

  1. Locate the lamp door.

Look at the top, side, or bottom of the projector for a small panel.
It's usually marked or has visible screws.
Refer to your BenQ manual if not obvious.
The door contains the lamp module.

  2. Close the door firmly.

    Push the door closed.
Make sure it sits flush with the projector body.
If it has a retaining screw, tighten it firmly (but don't overtighten — finger-tight is enough on most models).
The interlock switch is engaged when the door is fully closed.

  3. Check the interlock switch.

If the door is closed and the warning persists, look at the interlock area (where the door meets the body).
Sometimes a small mechanical switch is visible.
Press it manually to confirm it clicks.
If stuck, gently exercise it back and forth.

  4. Inspect for warping or damage.

Heat from the lamp can warp the door slightly over time.
If the door doesn't sit flush, check for visible warping.
Replacement doors are available from BenQ (50-100 USD typical) but installation may require service tech depending on model.

  5. Schedule service if persistent.

If the door looks fine and the interlock seems to work but warning continues, the switch may be electrically failed.
Service tech can replace the switch (small inexpensive part) — 30-60 USD parts plus 30 minutes labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is the lamp door interlock so important?

UHE projector lamps run at extreme pressure (mercury vapor at 100+ atmospheres).
If a lamp fails while the door is open, glass and mercury vapor could escape.
The interlock prevents the lamp from running unless the door is sealed.
Don't try to bypass — it's there for genuine safety reasons.

Will the projector work at all with this warning?

No — the interlock physically prevents the lamp from powering on.
The projector can power on (display menus, settings) but won't project an image.
Until the door is properly closed and the interlock is satisfied, the lamp stays off.
That's by design.
