Air Filter Clogged

Epson Projector

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'Air filter clogged' means dust has accumulated in the air filter and airflow is restricted.
Without enough cooling air, the lamp overheats and lifespan shortens dramatically.
Power off, let cool, remove the filter (usually a small panel on the side), vacuum or rinse it, and reinstall.
For heavily soiled filters or after several cleanings, replacement is the better option.

Affected Models

  • Epson PowerLite
  • Epson EB series
  • Epson Pro Cinema
  • Epson Home Cinema

Common Causes

  • Dust accumulation over months of operation
  • Projector used in dusty environment (basement, classroom)
  • Pet hair drawn into filter intake
  • Filter past service life (rare — usually clean and reuse)
  • Filter installed wrong direction (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and let cool.

    Turn the projector off.
Wait for the cooling fan to stop (1-2 minutes).
    Unplug from the wall.
Wait additional 15 minutes for internal components to cool before opening the filter compartment.

  2. Find the filter access panel.

Most Epson projectors have a filter on the side or bottom of the projector.
Look for a small panel with a vent grille.
    Slide or unclip to remove.
You'll see the filter element — typically a foam pad or pleated cartridge.

  3. Vacuum the filter.

Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment to suck dust off the filter.
Don't use compressed air pointing into the projector — that pushes dust deeper inside.
For washable foam filters: rinse under water, squeeze dry, let air dry 24 hours before reinstalling.

  4. Replace if heavily damaged.

If the filter is torn, severely discolored, or you've cleaned it 3-4 times already, replace.
    Genuine Epson filters: 15–30 USD.
Match the part number for your specific model.
Generic filters fit most models and work fine for most users.

  5. Reinstall and reset filter timer.

Slide the filter back into the slot, ensuring proper orientation (usually marked with arrows).
    Close the access panel.
    Power on.
Menu → Reset → Reset Filter Hours → Yes.
    This resets the maintenance counter.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I clean the filter?

Every 100 hours of use is the Epson recommendation.
Heavy-use environments (classrooms, conference rooms): more often.
Dusty environments (basements, dusty offices): every 50 hours.
Schools and offices typically clean monthly during heavy semesters.

Will Epson keep working with a clogged filter?

Initially yes — the warning appears but the projector continues running.
If you ignore it, internal temperature rises and the projector enters thermal protection (overheat shutdown).
Long-term, ignored clogged filters dramatically shorten lamp life.
Address the warning when it appears.
