No Source Detected

Epson Projector

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

'No Source Detected' means the projector isn't receiving a video signal from any input.
The source device is off, the cable is disconnected, or you've selected the wrong input on the projector.
Power on your source device (laptop, Apple TV, etc.), check the cable is firmly plugged in at both ends, and press the source button on the remote to cycle through inputs.
Fix is usually a 30-second cable check.

Affected Models

  • Epson PowerLite
  • Epson EB series
  • Epson Pro Cinema
  • Epson Home Cinema
  • Epson EpiqVision

Common Causes

  • Source device powered off or in sleep
  • HDMI/VGA cable disconnected or loose
  • Wrong input selected on the projector
  • Source device output disabled (laptop display settings)
  • Cable damaged (kinks, cracks)

How to Fix It

  1. Confirm the source device is on.

Whether laptop, Apple TV, Roku, or game console — make sure it's powered on.
    Wake up sleeping devices.
For laptops, ensure the lid is open and the screen is showing content.
Sounds obvious but is the most common 'No Source' cause.

  2. Check both ends of the cable.

Unplug the HDMI/VGA cable from both the source and projector.
Push back in firmly until you hear/feel the click.
HDMI cables can work loose from vibration over time.
Try a different known-good cable as test.

  3. Press the Source button.

On the Epson remote (or projector), press 'Source' or 'Search'.
The projector cycles through HDMI 1, HDMI 2, VGA, USB, etc.
If the cable is connected to HDMI 1 but the projector is on HDMI 2, this corrects it.
Some Epson models have auto-source-detect that finds the active input.

  4. Verify laptop output (if applicable).

On Windows: Win+P opens display settings.
    Choose Duplicate or Extend.
The projector should appear within 10-30 seconds.
On Mac: System Preferences → Displays → Detect Displays.
Some laptops require enabling external display in BIOS or display settings.

  5. Try a different cable.

HDMI cables fail intermittently, especially after years of use or kinks.
Try a known-good cable from a different device.
If the new cable resolves 'No Source', your old cable was failing.
Replace; HDMI cables are 5-15 USD for quality ones.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my laptop work elsewhere but not on the projector?

Laptops sometimes default to internal display only and need to be told to extend.
Use Win+P (Windows) or System Preferences (Mac) to configure.
Also check display drivers are updated — outdated drivers can cause HDMI handshake failures.

What's the difference between HDMI 1 and HDMI 2?

Most modern Epson projectors have multiple HDMI inputs.
They're physically separate ports.
The projector can only display one at a time.
If your cable is in HDMI 2 but the projector is set to HDMI 1, you see 'No Source'.
Press source button to switch.
