Temperature Too High

Epson Projector

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

'Internal temperature too high' means cooling isn't keeping up with the heat generated by the lamp.
The projector enters protection mode and may shut down soon.
Check the air filter (clean or replace), make sure ventilation around the projector is unobstructed, and let it cool before continuing.
If the warning persists with clean filter and good ventilation, the cooling fan or lamp itself may be failing.

Affected Models

  • Epson PowerLite
  • Epson EB series
  • Epson Pro Cinema
  • Epson Home Cinema

Common Causes

  • Air filter clogged restricting airflow
  • Projector in enclosed space with poor ventilation
  • Cooling fan failing or weak
  • Lamp at end of life producing more heat
  • Ambient room temperature very high

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and let fully cool.

    Turn the projector off.
Wait for the cooling cycle to complete (fan continues running for 1-2 minutes).
    Unplug from the wall.
Wait at least 30 minutes for internal temperature to drop before doing anything else.

  2. Check the air filter.

Pull the filter out (see Epson manual for specific filter location).
If dusty, vacuum or rinse and dry thoroughly.
If heavily soiled or torn, replace.
A clogged filter is the most common cause of high-temperature warnings.

  3. Verify ventilation around the projector.

Check that air vents on the projector aren't blocked.
Make sure there's at least 6 inches (15 cm) of clear space on all sides.
If mounted in a tight cabinet or recess, hot air can recirculate.
Open the cabinet or move the projector for better airflow.

  4. Reduce ambient temperature.

If the room is very hot (summer afternoons in unconditioned spaces), the projector can't cool itself effectively.
Lower the room temperature with AC or fans.
Avoid running projectors in direct sun.
Some Epson models specify maximum ambient temperature (typically 35°C / 95°F).

  5. Check the cooling fan.

Power on with the projector cool.
Listen for the cooling fan — should run continuously while the lamp is on.
If silent or grinding, the fan is failing.
Replacement fans on Epson projectors are 30-80 USD parts plus 1-2 hours of service-tech labor.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I keep using the projector with this warning?

Briefly yes, but you should address it quickly.
Continued operation with inadequate cooling shortens lamp life dramatically (lamps degrade faster at high temperature).
Eventually the protection escalates to thermal shutdown.
Fix the cause within a day or two.

Why does this happen during long presentations?

Long presentations let internal temperature build up, especially if filter is partially clogged.
During short meetings, heat doesn't accumulate enough to trigger.
If you frequently run long presentations, schedule filter cleaning more often — every 50 hours instead of 100.
