E2
Bosch Refrigerator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E2 means the temperature sensor in the refrigerator section has shorted, opened, or is reading nonsense values.
The fridge falls back to a default temperature pattern, which usually leaves the fridge slightly too warm or slightly too cold depending on the model.
Move perishable food to a cooler if needed and book service — the sensor itself is cheap, but accessing it requires panel removal.
Affected Models
- Bosch B36CL80SNS
- Bosch 800 Series B11CB50SSS
- Bosch B36CD50SNB
- Bosch 500 Series B36CT80SNB
- Bosch B30IR70NSP
Common Causes
- Failed thermistor (NTC sensor) in the refrigerator section
- Loose connector at the sensor or the main control board
- Wiring damaged from frost cycles (rare)
- Moisture in the sensor housing causing intermittent shorts
- Control board input fault (uncommon)
How to Fix It
-
Check the actual fridge temperature with a thermometer.
Place a fridge/freezer thermometer in the centre of the fridge section for a few hours.
If it reads 3–5°C (37–41°F) you're cooling normally — the fridge is running on its default fallback and food is safe.
If it's much warmer, move perishables to a cooler while you arrange service. -
Cut power for 10 minutes.
Unplug the fridge or trip the breaker for 10 minutes.
Some E2 events from a transient sensor read clear after a cold restart.
If E2 returns the moment power comes back, the sensor or wiring has a real fault. -
Inspect the visible interior.
Look for water stains, frost in unusual places, or any sign that something has leaked behind the rear panel.
Most Bosch fridges have the sensor mounted near the top-rear, behind a removable plastic cover.
Don't remove the cover yourself — that's where service comes in. -
Book Bosch-authorised service.
Provide the model number from inside the door frame.
The technician brings the matching sensor, removes the rear interior panel, swaps it, and verifies cooling before closing up.
Whole job typically runs 45–60 minutes.
When to Call a Professional
E2 needs an appliance technician.
The sensor is buried behind the rear interior panel of the fridge section.
The part costs $25–$60; labour adds $100–$180.
Total typical cost is $150–$250 fitted.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will my food spoil while waiting for the repair?
Probably not.
Bosch fridges run a fallback temperature when E2 is active — usually within 1–2°C of the normal target.
Check with a thermometer; if it's at or near the target, food is safe.
If readings are above 7°C (44°F), move perishables to a cooler with ice.
What's the difference between E1 and E2 on a Bosch fridge?
E1 is typically the freezer-section sensor.
E2 is the refrigerator-section sensor.
Both use the same kind of NTC thermistor, just at different locations.
The fix is the same approach but the access point inside the fridge is different.
