SY EF

Frigidaire Refrigerator

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

Frigidaire SY EF error means the evaporator fan motor has stopped or failed. The fridge section will warm up because cold air cannot circulate from the freezer. Manually defrost the unit first — ice around the fan shaft is a common cause.

Affected Models

  • Frigidaire French Door Refrigerator
  • Frigidaire Side-by-Side Refrigerator
  • Frigidaire Gallery Refrigerator
  • Frigidaire Professional Refrigerator

Common Causes

  • Evaporator fan motor burned out or bearing seized
  • Ice build-up around the fan motor shaft preventing rotation
  • Fan blade cracked or hitting the ice build-up
  • Control board not sending power to the fan motor
  • Wiring harness between the board and the fan motor damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug and manually defrost.

Ice packing around the evaporator fan motor is a very common cause of SY EF. Unplug the refrigerator and leave all doors open for 24 hours. Allow all ice to melt completely before restarting.

  2. Check the evaporator fan after defrosting.

After defrosting, remove the rear panel in the freezer compartment. Simulate a closed door by pressing the door switch. The fan should start within 30 seconds. If the fan does not run, the motor has failed.

  3. Check the fan blade.

Try spinning the fan blade by hand — it should rotate freely with no resistance. A cracked blade or one that binds on the housing causes the motor to overheat and fail over time.

  4. Replace the evaporator fan motor.

Find the model number on the fridge door frame label. Order the matching evaporator fan motor. Replacement requires accessing the rear freezer panel, unplugging the motor connector, and swapping the motor — typically a 30–45 minute repair.

When to Call a Professional

If defrosting and checking the fan blade does not resolve SY EF, the fan motor has failed mechanically. Evaporator fan motor replacement is a moderate DIY repair or can be performed by a technician.
