Error Code E0
GE Refrigerator
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
GE Error Code E0 indicates a fault with the refrigerator compartment temperature sensor. The fridge cannot maintain accurate temperature without it, so food safety may be at risk. A power reset may clear a transient E0 — if it returns, the thermistor needs to be tested and replaced.
Affected Models
- GE Profile French Door Refrigerator
- GE Side-by-Side Refrigerator
- GE Cafe Refrigerator
Common Causes
- Fridge compartment thermistor (temperature sensor) failed
- Wiring to the thermistor damaged or disconnected at the connector
- Main control board fault — false E0 reading
How to Fix It
-
Power reset the fridge.
Unplug the GE refrigerator for 5 minutes and restore power. If Error E0 was triggered by a voltage transient, it will clear after the reset. Monitor for 12–24 hours before investigating further.
-
Find the fridge thermistor.
The GE fridge compartment thermistor is typically located on the rear wall of the fresh food section, secured by a clip. It is a small cylindrical component with two wires. Refer to your model's service manual for the exact location.
-
Check the wiring and connector.
Trace the thermistor wires to the connector and confirm it is fully seated. Look for any breaks, burns, or corrosion in the wiring. A partially disconnected connector mimics a sensor failure and shows Error E0.
-
Measure thermistor resistance.
Disconnect the thermistor connector and use a multimeter to measure resistance. At 0°C (32°F), GE fridge thermistors typically read approximately 16,000 ohms. At room temperature (~20°C) the reading is approximately 5,000–10,000 ohms. Consult your model's service manual for precise values.
-
Replace the thermistor.
Order a compatible replacement thermistor using your GE model number (found on the label inside the fridge door). Clip the new sensor in the original position, reconnect the wiring, and restore power. Error E0 should clear on the next power-up.
When to Call a Professional
If the thermistor resistance is within spec but Error E0 persists, the main control board is the likely cause. Board replacement is a service-level repair.
