ER GF
LG Refrigerator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
ER GF is the geared motor fault — usually the small motor that drives the ice maker's auger.
The motor is stalled, the gear assembly is jammed, or the motor itself has failed.
Most often it's ice clumped together inside the bin causing the auger to stall.
Empty the ice bin, manually turn the auger, and reset.
If ER GF returns, the motor needs replacement.
Affected Models
- LG InstaView
- LG French door
- LG side-by-side
- LG smart Wi-Fi refrigerator
Common Causes
- Ice clumped together in the bin (most common)
- Auger gear stripped after years of use
- Motor itself failed
- Motor wiring loose at the harness
- Control board's motor driver section damaged
How to Fix It
-
Empty the ice bin.
Pull the ice maker bin out of the fridge.
Empty all ice into the sink — including any frozen-together clumps.
Wipe the bin dry.
Look at the auger inside the bin — should rotate freely with finger pressure.
If it's frozen stuck, run warm water over it gently to free it. -
Inspect the ice maker mechanism.
Look at the back of the ice maker compartment (where the bin sat).
You'll see the auger drive coupling — a small plastic gear that turns the auger when the bin is in place.
Try turning it with your finger.
It should rotate with light resistance.
If it grinds or won't turn, the motor or gears are damaged. -
Reset the fridge.
Unplug for 5 minutes.
Plug back in.
Wait 30 minutes.
If ER GF doesn't return, the issue was just clumped ice and you've fixed it.
If ER GF returns within an hour, it's a real motor or gear fault. -
Try the ice maker reset button.
Most LG ice makers have a small reset button (sometimes labeled 'Test') on the ice maker module.
Press and hold for 3 seconds.
This forces the ice maker to run a complete test cycle.
If you hear the motor try to turn but it grinds or makes unusual noise, the gear assembly is damaged. -
Call LG service if ER GF persists.
If ice was clear and the auger moves freely but ER GF still appears, the motor or gear assembly needs replacement.
Most LG ice maker assemblies are around 150–250 USD parts.
It's a single-bolt swap typically, well within service tech ability.
1–2 hours total job time.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ice clump together in the bin?
Two main reasons: the bin sits unused for days (older ice partially melts and refreezes into clumps) or the freezer is too warm.
If you notice clumping repeatedly, check freezer temperature — should be -18°C / 0°F.
If higher, fix the freezer issue first; ice clumping is a symptom.
Can I disable the ice maker if I rarely use it?
Yes — most LG models have an ice maker on/off switch on the ice maker itself or in the touchscreen settings.
Turning it off prevents ER GF from triggering when the unit isn't being used.
Ice already in the bin will eventually need emptying or it'll clump regardless.
