ER IF

LG Refrigerator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

ER IF on an LG fridge means the ice maker fan motor has failed, is blocked by ice, or has lost its connection. Defrost any visible ice around the icemaker compartment and check the fan can spin freely. Persistent ER IF needs fan replacement.

Affected Models

  • LG LFXS28968S
  • LG LRMVS3006S
  • LG LFXC22526S
  • LG LRFDS3006S
  • LG LRMDS3006S

Common Causes

  • Ice build-up around the ice-maker fan blocking rotation
  • Failed ice-maker fan motor (worn brushes or bearings)
  • Loose fan motor connector at the harness
  • Frost from a leaking door gasket reaching the fan area

How to Fix It

  1. Defrost the ice-maker compartment.

Empty the ice bin, switch the icemaker off, and unplug the fridge for 8 hours (or up to 24 hours) with the freezer door slightly ajar. This melts any ice that may be jamming the fan blades. Place towels to catch dripping water.

  2. Restore power and observe.

Plug back in, close the door, and wait for the icemaker compartment to come down to temperature. Listen for the fan running. ER IF should clear if the fan was simply iced up.

  3. Check the door seals.

Inspect the freezer door gasket for tears, gaps, or food residue keeping it from sealing. Air leaking past a damaged gasket creates the moisture that freezes around the icemaker fan. Clean or replace the gasket as needed.

  4. Book service for fan replacement.

If ER IF returns after a successful defrost, the fan motor itself has failed. LG ice-maker fan replacements cost roughly USD 80–150 fitted. The fan sits in the icemaker compartment and is accessed by removing several panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between ER IF, ER FF, and ER CF on an LG fridge?

All three are fan motor errors — ER IF is the icemaker fan, ER FF is the freezer fan, and ER CF is the condenser fan (at the back of the fridge). The fix approach is similar for each: defrost, check for blockage, then replace if needed.

Will my LG fridge still work with ER IF?

Cooling continues normally — ER IF only affects ice production. The icemaker may run but produce no ice or hollow cubes. The display continues to show ER IF until the fan is repaired.
