ER LO
LG Refrigerator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
ER LO is the linear compressor protection — LG's variable-speed compressor stopped because the controller detected unsafe operation.
Could be voltage instability, ambient temperature too high, or refrigerant issues.
Make sure the fridge has clearance behind it (5 cm minimum), the room isn't extremely hot, and try a power cycle.
If ER LO returns, schedule LG service — linear compressors are warranty parts on most models.
Affected Models
- LG InstaView
- LG linear compressor models
- LG French door
- LG smart Wi-Fi refrigerator
Common Causes
- Ambient temperature too high (room above 32°C / 90°F)
- Insufficient clearance behind the fridge for ventilation
- Voltage drop at the wall outlet
- Refrigerant pressure abnormal
- Linear compressor itself failing
How to Fix It
-
Check the room temperature.
LG fridges are spec'd for ambient temperatures up to 32°C / 90°F.
Running them in hotter rooms (garages in summer, poorly ventilated kitchens) trips ER LO.
If the room is hot, the fridge is the symptom, not the cause.
Add ventilation or move the fridge. -
Check fridge clearance.
Pull the fridge forward gently and look at the gap behind it.
Should be at least 5 cm (2 inches) for proper airflow over the condenser coils.
If the gap is smaller, the compressor overheats and ER LO triggers.
Fix the clearance issue before assuming the compressor is bad. -
Vacuum the condenser coils.
On the back or bottom of the fridge, find the black coil or grille.
Vacuum it gently with a brush attachment.
Dust on the coils makes the compressor work harder, leading to ER LO.
Annual cleaning prevents most ambient-related failures. -
Test the wall outlet voltage.
If you have a multimeter, test the outlet voltage with the fridge running.
Should read 110–120 V (US) or 220–240 V (Europe) without significant sag.
Voltage drops below 100 V (US) or 200 V (Europe) make the linear compressor trip ER LO.
An electrician check is needed if voltage is low. -
Schedule LG service if ER LO persists.
If the room is normal, clearance is good, coils are clean, and voltage is fine, the compressor itself is degrading.
Most LG linear compressors have a 10-year warranty — check your purchase date.
Within warranty: parts free, labor may be covered.
Out of warranty: budget 500–800 USD for compressor replacement.
Frequently Asked Questions
Why does ER LO happen mostly in summer?
Summer combines higher ambient temperatures with higher cooling demand — the linear compressor works harder for longer cycles.
Marginal cooling situations (poor ventilation, dirty coils) become real failures in summer.
An annual pre-summer cleaning prevents most of it.
What's a linear compressor?
LG's design uses a magnetic-driven linear motion instead of the rotary motion of standard compressors.
It's quieter, more efficient, and typically lasts longer.
The trade-off is more sensitive electronics — codes like ER LO appear because the controller can detect issues earlier than older compressor designs.
