ER FF

LG Refrigerator

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

LG fridge ER FF error means the freezer fan motor has stopped and cold air is no longer circulating. The fridge section will warm up rapidly. The fan motor needs replacement — this is a moderate DIY repair.

Affected Models

  • LG French Door Refrigerator
  • LG Side-by-Side Refrigerator
  • LG Bottom Freezer Refrigerator
  • LG InstaView Refrigerator

Common Causes

  • Evaporator fan motor burned out or seized
  • Ice build-up around the fan motor shaft preventing rotation
  • Fan blade cracked or broken
  • Wiring harness to the fan motor damaged
  • Main control board fault preventing power to the fan

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the fridge and manually defrost the freezer.

Leave the fridge unplugged with the freezer door open for 24 hours. Ice build-up around the fan motor shaft is a common cause of ER FF — the motor cannot turn if ice has packed around it. After defrosting, plug the fridge back in and check if ER FF clears.

  2. Test the evaporator fan manually.

After defrosting, remove the rear panel inside the freezer. Press the door switch to simulate a closed door — the fan should start within 30 seconds. If the fan does not run and the motor feels hot or seized, the motor has failed.

  3. Check the fan blade.

Inspect the plastic fan blade for cracks or chips that cause it to bind. Try spinning the blade by hand — it should rotate freely with no resistance. A cracked blade or one that is binding on its housing will cause the motor to fail from overload.

  4. Replace the evaporator fan motor.

LG evaporator fan motors are available as spare parts for most models. Note your model number from the door frame label and order the matching part. Replacement involves removing the rear freezer panel and unplugging the motor connector — typically a 30–60 minute repair.

When to Call a Professional

If defrosting the evaporator section and checking the fan blade does not resolve ER FF, the fan motor itself has failed and needs replacement. The part is available for most LG models and is a moderate DIY repair requiring access to the rear freezer panel.
