F2

Miele Refrigerator

Severity: Moderate

What it means

Miele refrigerator F2 means the NTC temperature sensor reads as an open circuit — infinite resistance, as if the wire is broken.
The control board can't see the sensor at all.
Most often it's a connector that has come loose during a service call or vibration; less commonly the sensor wire itself has failed.
F2 is the open-circuit twin of F1 (which is a short on the same sensor).

Affected Models

  • Miele K-series built-in refrigerators
  • Miele KFN combi fridge-freezers
  • Miele KS freestanding refrigerators
  • Miele MasterCool side-by-side units

Common Causes

  • Sensor connector unplugged or partly seated
  • NTC wire broken inside the harness (fatigue from door movement)
  • Sensor terminal corroded — typical in older units near the chiller drawer
  • Internal sensor failure (open thermistor element)
  • Control board input failed (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Power off and inspect the connector.

    Switch off at the wall.
Pull the unit forward (freestanding) or remove the front grille (built-in).
Find the NTC connector — usually a small 2-pin plug on the harness near the rear of the cabinet.
Unplug it, look for corrosion or bent pins, plug it back in firmly.
Power on and watch for F2 to clear.

  2. Test continuity through the sensor wire.

Disconnect the sensor at both ends.
    Use a multimeter on continuity.
One end should read continuity to the other through the wire.
If you read open (no continuity), the wire has broken inside the harness — replace the sensor or splice the break (Miele recommends replacement).

  3. Test the NTC resistance.

With the sensor disconnected, measure resistance across the two pins.
Working: around 5 kΩ at 25°C.
Reading 'OL' or out-of-range: the NTC element has failed open — replace the sensor.

  4. Replace the sensor if needed.

Order the correct part number for your Miele model.
The sensor clips into a bracket inside the compartment with a small wire grommet at the back.
Mark the routing of the old wire before removing — the replacement needs the same path so the door can close cleanly.

When to Call a Professional

Built-in Miele models hide the sensor harness behind cabinet panels.
If reseating the visible connector doesn't clear F2, a Miele technician can trace the harness with a multimeter without disassembling the cabinet.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does F2 sometimes appear after a service visit?

Service techs unplug sensor connectors when working on the appliance.
If the connector isn't fully seated when reassembled, F2 shows up the next time the unit cycles.
The fix is just reseating it — check the most-recently-touched connectors first.
