14E

Samsung Refrigerator

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

14E points to the water inlet temperature sensor — the small thermistor that monitors the water dispenser's incoming water temperature.
Either the sensor has failed open or shorted, or its wire has come loose at the main board.
The fridge keeps running but the water dispenser may dispense at the wrong temperature.
It's a minor code — book a service visit when convenient, no rush.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Family Hub
  • Samsung 4-door French door
  • Samsung side-by-side
  • Samsung RF series

Common Causes

  • Water inlet sensor failed (open thermistor)
  • Sensor wire disconnected at the main board
  • Moisture in the sensor connector causing intermittent reads
  • Wire pinched during a previous repair
  • Main board sensor input damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Power-cycle the fridge.

Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes.
    Plug it back in.
Wait an hour and check if 14E returns.
Some 14E events are transient and clear after a clean reset.
If it's gone after the cycle, no further action needed unless it returns.

  2. Check the water dispenser temperature.

If 14E persists, dispense a glass of water and feel the temperature.
Is it noticeably warmer or colder than usual?
The 14E sensor controls cold-water timing — if water is the right temperature, the fault may be cosmetic.
    Note this for the technician.

  3. Don't open the fridge yourself.

The water inlet sensor lives behind the rear panel near the water valve.
Accessing it means pulling the fridge out, removing back panels, and working around the water lines.
This is a tech-level repair — leave it for a Samsung-authorized service visit.

  4. Schedule a Samsung service call.

Bring your model and serial number (inside the fridge, on a sticker).
Most service techs carry replacement sensors for popular Samsung models.
The repair is typically under 100 USD parts plus labor.
Out of warranty, the diagnostic visit may cost more than the part.

  5. Use water dispenser cautiously until fixed.

If water dispenses lukewarm or unusually cold, that's the sensor reading wrong.
Switch to using a pitcher in the meantime if temperature matters.
The sensor doesn't affect food storage temperature, just dispenser water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will 14E affect my food?

No.
The water inlet sensor only controls dispenser water timing — it has no role in fridge or freezer compartment temperature.
Food stays at the right temperature regardless.
14E is a quality-of-life issue, not a food safety issue.

Can I bypass the sensor in firmware?

No, and you shouldn't try to.
Samsung's firmware uses the inlet sensor for water timing.
Without it, the dispenser may behave unpredictably.
Replacing the sensor is straightforward for a tech — that's the right fix, not bypassing.
