84C

Samsung Refrigerator

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

84C is one of the more serious Samsung codes — the inverter board that drives the compressor is reporting a fault.
The fridge may stop cooling, run intermittently, or refuse to start the compressor entirely.
Get a thermometer in the fridge to check temperature and move food to a cooler if it's warming.
This is a service-call situation — the inverter board is a 200–400 USD repair, but ignoring it ruins food.

Affected Models

  • Samsung Family Hub
  • Samsung 4-door French door
  • Samsung side-by-side
  • Samsung RF series

Common Causes

  • Inverter board failed (most common after 5+ years)
  • Compressor motor windings damaged
  • Power surge fried the inverter MOSFETs
  • Loose connector between inverter and compressor
  • Compressor itself seized (worst case)

How to Fix It

  1. Check internal temperature.

Place a thermometer in a glass of water in the fridge for an hour.
    Should read 3–5°C / 37–40°F.
If it's warmer, food safety is becoming a concern — move perishables to a cooler with ice while you arrange repair.

  2. Listen for the compressor.

Stand near the back of the fridge.
Do you hear the compressor running periodically?
If silent for hours, the compressor isn't starting at all.
If you hear clicks but no sustained run, it's trying to start and failing.
Both point to inverter or compressor issues.

  3. Power-cycle the fridge once.

    Unplug for 30 minutes.
    Plug back in.
Listen for the compressor to start within 10 minutes.
Some 84C events clear after a long power-off (capacitors fully discharge).
If 84C returns within hours, it's a real fault.

  4. Don't keep cycling power.

Repeated power cycles on a failing inverter can damage the compressor.
If 84C returns after one reset, leave it alone and call for service.
The protection is there to prevent a 400 USD repair from becoming a 1500 USD repair.

  5. Schedule emergency service.

84C with rising fridge temperature is treated as urgent by Samsung service.
Call and explain the code is showing and food is at risk.
Most authorized centers offer same-day or next-day for 84C.
Out of warranty: budget 200–500 USD for inverter board replacement.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 84C the same as the compressor failing?

Not necessarily — most 84C events are inverter board failures, not compressor failures.
The inverter is the electronics that drive the compressor; replacing the board fixes the issue.
True compressor failure (motor seized) is rarer but more expensive.
The technician's first test will determine which.

Can I keep using the fridge with 84C?

No.
Even if it's still cooling occasionally, the protection has triggered for a reason — running through 84C risks compressor damage that turns a 400 USD repair into 1500+ USD.
Move food to coolers and call for service immediately.
