Error Code E1

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Whirlpool Error Code E1 indicates a fault with the refrigerator compartment temperature sensor (thermistor). The fridge cannot regulate temperature accurately without it. A power reset sometimes clears transient E1 errors — if it returns, the thermistor needs testing and likely replacement.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool French Door Refrigerator
  • Whirlpool Side-by-Side Refrigerator
  • Whirlpool Top Mount Refrigerator

Common Causes

  • Fridge compartment thermistor failed or reading out of range
  • Wiring to the thermistor damaged or disconnected
  • Control board fault sending false E1 code

How to Fix It

  1. Perform a power reset.

Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes and plug it back in. This clears transient error codes caused by power fluctuations. If Error E1 does not return within 12 hours, no further action is needed.

  2. Locate the thermistor.

The fridge compartment thermistor is typically clipped to a shelf support or the interior rear wall inside the fridge section. On most Whirlpool models it is a small sensor with two wires leading to a plastic connector.

  3. Inspect the thermistor wiring.

Trace the thermistor wires to their connector and check for broken, pinched, or corroded wires. A loose connector can cause an E1 error even with a functioning thermistor — reseat the connector firmly.

  4. Test thermistor resistance.

Disconnect the thermistor connector and test resistance with a multimeter. At 0°C (32°F) most Whirlpool fridge thermistors read approximately 16,000–17,000 ohms. At room temperature (~20°C) the reading is approximately 5,000–10,000 ohms. Check your model's service manual for exact values.

  5. Replace the thermistor.

Order a replacement thermistor for your specific Whirlpool model number. Clip the new thermistor in the same location as the original. Power on — Error E1 should clear.

When to Call a Professional

If the thermistor tests fine (resistance within expected range) but E1 persists, the main control board has likely failed. Control board replacement is best handled by a qualified appliance technician.
