E4

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

E4 on a Whirlpool fridge is the defrost sensor (also called the bimetal sensor) — the thermistor that monitors evaporator coil temperature during defrost cycles.
If it reads out of range, the controller can't run a normal defrost cycle and ice builds up on the freezer back wall.
If you see frost accumulation in the freezer, E4 is causing real damage — schedule service soon.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool French door
  • Whirlpool side-by-side
  • Whirlpool top freezer
  • Whirlpool WRF series

Common Causes

  • Defrost sensor failed (open or shorted thermistor)
  • Sensor wire damaged at a flex point
  • Connector loose at the main board
  • Heavy ice buildup encasing the sensor
  • Main board sensor input damaged

How to Fix It

  1. Look in the freezer for ice buildup.

Empty the freezer and inspect the back wall.
If you see frost or ice on the back panel, defrost isn't running and E4 is causing real harm.
If the back wall is clean and the freezer is at normal temperature, E4 may be intermittent.
    Either way, schedule service.

  2. Power-cycle the fridge.

    Unplug for 10 minutes.
    Plug back in.
Some E4 events clear after a clean reset.
    Wait an hour and check.
If E4 doesn't return and the freezer is at normal temperature, monitor for recurrence over the next few days.

  3. Check freezer temperature.

Use a thermometer in a cup of water in the freezer overnight.
Should read at or below -18°C / 0°F.
If it's warmer, the defrost issue is affecting actual operation.
This is food safety — get service the same day if temperature is rising.

  4. Don't try to access the sensor yourself.

The defrost sensor is behind the freezer back panel, attached to the evaporator coil.
Access requires emptying the freezer and removing panels.
Service technician territory — Whirlpool authorized centers do this routinely.

  5. Schedule Whirlpool service.

Provide model and serial numbers when scheduling.
The repair is typically replacing the defrost sensor (a 30-100 USD part) plus an hour of labor.
Total bill 150–250 USD out of warranty.
    Free under standard Whirlpool warranty.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does E4 cause freezer ice buildup?

Without an accurate defrost sensor reading, the controller can't tell when defrost has completed.
Either it ends defrost too early (frost remains and accumulates) or doesn't run defrost at all.
Either way, ice builds up on the coil over weeks until airflow blocks and the freezer warms up.

Can I run a manual defrost?

On most Whirlpool models, no — there's no user-accessible manual defrost.
The workaround is unplugging the fridge for 24 hours with food in coolers, which melts the ice.
This is a temporary fix only — the sensor still needs replacement to prevent recurrence within weeks.
