E6
Whirlpool Refrigerator
Severity: ModerateWhat Does This Error Mean?
E6 is a communication fault between the main control board and another component — typically the user interface display, the inverter board (newer inverter models), or a secondary control module.
About half the time it's a loose ribbon cable from a previous service or rough handling.
A power cycle clears many E6 events; if it returns, schedule service.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool French door
- Whirlpool side-by-side
- Whirlpool top freezer
- Whirlpool WRF series
Common Causes
- Loose ribbon cable between main board and display
- Communication wire to the inverter board damaged
- Power surge corrupted a board's communication chip
- Moisture inside the cabinet on a board
- Main board itself failed
How to Fix It
-
Power-cycle the fridge.
Unplug for 5 minutes.
Plug back in.
Wait for the display to fully boot.
If E6 doesn't return within an hour, the cycle was successful — monitor for recurrence over a few days. -
Check the display for issues.
Look at the front panel display.
Any flickering, dim segments, or unusual character display?
If the display itself looks unhealthy, the user interface board is the failing component.
Note this for the technician — speeds diagnosis. -
Look for moisture or damage.
Look around the fridge — any signs of water damage on the floor, behind the unit, or inside the freezer?
Moisture on circuit boards causes communication faults.
If you find any, mention it to the technician so they check that area first. -
Don't open the fridge yourself.
Communication boards are inside the cabinet and behind sealed access panels.
Most fridges have boards in the back-bottom area, accessible only by pulling the fridge forward and removing covers.
Service technician territory. -
Schedule a Whirlpool service visit.
Provide model and serial numbers.
Most E6 fixes are loose connector reseats (free once on site) or display board replacement (50–150 USD part).
Worst case is main board replacement (200–400 USD).
Diagnostic visit determines which.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will food stay safe with E6?
Sometimes yes, sometimes no — depends on which subsystem lost comms.
If it's the display only, cooling continues normally and food is fine.
If it's the inverter or compressor control, cooling stops and food is at risk.
Use a thermometer to confirm before assuming you can wait.
Can a power surge cause E6?
Yes — surges damage the communication chips on circuit boards.
If E6 appeared right after a thunderstorm or power outage, surge damage is the likely cause.
Adding a small surge protector to the fridge's outlet prevents recurrence — cheap insurance.
