F2

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity: Critical

What Does This Error Mean?

F2 means the fridge or freezer has detected a temperature too high for safe food storage.
Either cooling has failed, the door has been left open, or the temperature sensor is reading wrong.
This is urgent — open the fridge, check that all doors close fully, and look for obvious issues.
If cooling is gone and food is at risk, move perishables to coolers and call for service.

Affected Models

  • Whirlpool French door
  • Whirlpool side-by-side
  • Whirlpool top freezer
  • Whirlpool WRF series

Common Causes

  • Door left open or not sealed
  • Compressor failure (cooling stopped)
  • Condenser coils blocked or dirty
  • Defrost system failed (ice blocking airflow)
  • Temperature sensor reading falsely high

How to Fix It

  1. Check that all doors are fully closed.

Walk around the fridge and confirm every door is shut and sealed.
French doors sometimes don't catch properly if the fridge isn't perfectly level.
    Push each door closed firmly.
If F2 clears within an hour, the cause was an open door.

  2. Place a thermometer inside.

Use a thermometer in a glass of water for an hour.
    Fridge should be 3–5°C / 37–40°F, freezer at -18°C / 0°F.
If actual temperatures are correct, F2 is sensor-related (cosmetic).
If temperatures are climbing, cooling has genuinely failed and food is at risk.

  3. Check the condenser coils.

On the back or bottom of the fridge, find the black coil/grille.
Vacuum it with a brush attachment.
Heavily clogged coils make the compressor inefficient and trigger F2.
Clean coils alone fix many F2 events without needing service.

  4. Look for ice buildup.

If the freezer back wall has ice on it, defrost has failed and airflow is blocked.
This causes F2 because the fridge compartment can't get cold enough.
Empty the freezer and unplug for 24 hours to defrost manually, then call service to fix the defrost system.

  5. Move perishables and call service.

If F2 persists with rising temperatures, move dairy, meat, and leftovers to coolers immediately.
Call Whirlpool service the same day.
Cooling failures don't fix themselves and food is at risk every hour.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does food stay safe with F2?

USDA guidelines say a closed fridge keeps food safe for 4 hours after cooling stops; a closed freezer for 24–48 hours.
F2 itself doesn't tell you when cooling stopped — could have been minutes or hours ago.
When in doubt, move it to coolers with ice and don't reopen the fridge unnecessarily.

Why does F2 happen on hot summer days?

Summer ambient temperatures stress the cooling system — already-marginal compressors or dirty condenser coils that worked in spring can't keep up in heat.
If F2 appears in summer for the first time, condenser cleaning is the first thing to try.
Yearly cleaning prevents most heat-stress F2 events.
