PO
Whirlpool Refrigerator
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
PO is the power outage alert — the fridge lost power for a period and is letting you know once power returned.
It's not a fault, it's an FYI: check whether food in the freezer thawed.
Clear the alert by pressing and holding the alarm or filter button on the display.
The alert clears in seconds.
The real work is checking food safety, not clearing the alert.
Affected Models
- Whirlpool French door
- Whirlpool side-by-side

- Power outage in the home
- Circuit breaker tripped

- Outlet failure or wiring issue
- Whole-house power dip during a storm
How to Fix It
-
Press and hold the alarm button.
Find the button labeled 'Alarm', 'Alarm/Filter', or with a bell icon on the front panel.
Press and hold for 3 seconds.
The PO indicator clears.
If your model uses touch buttons instead of physical buttons, the same approach works on the touchscreen. -
Check the freezer for thawed food.
Open the freezer.
Look at packaged food — has any of it become soft, partially thawed, or wet?
If yes, the outage was long enough to compromise the freezer.
Refreeze only items that are still firm and cold; throw out anything that's softened. -
Check the fridge compartment.
Open the fridge and check temperature with a thermometer.
If it's above 7°C / 45°F, perishables (dairy, meat, leftovers) may have been at unsafe temperature for too long.
USDA rule: when in doubt, throw it out.
Don't taste-test — bacteria don't change taste at first. -
Check the breaker and outlet.
If you don't know how long power was out, check the wall outlet — is the plug fully in?
Check the breaker — is it tripped?
If the outage was localized to your fridge, fix the underlying issue before assuming the outage is over. -
Wait for cooling to recover.
After clearing PO, the fridge resumes normal cooling.
Give it 4–6 hours to fully recover proper temperatures.
Don't open the doors unnecessarily during recovery — every opening warms the interior and slows recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long can the freezer stay cold without power?
USDA: 24 hours if half-full, 48 hours if full, with the door kept closed.
If the door has been opened, deduct several hours.
Realistically a half-full freezer is at risk after 24 hours of outage; a full one at risk after 36 hours.
Can I disable the PO alert?
Yes — most Whirlpool models let you turn off the power outage alert in settings.
Some users find it annoying after frequent storms.
Pre-disable trade-off: you won't know when an outage happened, so you may miss food safety windows.
Only turn off if you have a generator or battery backup.
