E2

Whirlpool Refrigerator

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Error E2 means the fridge compartment thermistor has failed or is disconnected. The fridge cannot regulate its temperature correctly. A power reset sometimes clears the fault; otherwise the thermistor needs replacing.

How to Fix It

  1. Unplug the fridge for 5 minutes, reconnect, and monitor for E2 recurrence. A brief power cut can sometimes cause a false E2 reading.

  2. If E2 returns, locate the fridge compartment thermistor. On most Whirlpool models it is positioned inside the fridge at the back, near the evaporator vent or air duct cover.

  3. Inspect the thermistor connector for loose or corroded pins. Disconnect and reconnect the plug firmly. Check the wire run for any obvious damage.

  4. Test the thermistor with a multimeter at room temperature. A healthy NTC thermistor should read approximately 5,000-10,000 ohms at 20 degrees C.

  5. Replace the thermistor if it reads 0 or infinite ohms. Use the Whirlpool part number specific to your model. Reconnect the wiring, restore power, and confirm E2 is cleared.

Frequently Asked Questions

What happens if I ignore E2 on my Whirlpool fridge?

Without an accurate temperature reading, the control board cannot regulate the fridge section. It may run continuously (wasting energy and overcooling) or not cool enough, risking food safety.

Can E2 and E1 appear at the same time?

Yes. If the control board loses communication with both thermistors — often after a power surge — both E1 and E2 can appear together. Test both sensors before ordering parts.

Is E2 a DIY repair or do I need a technician?

Replacing a thermistor is a straightforward DIY repair for most Whirlpool fridge models. The sensor is accessible without specialist tools and the part is inexpensive.
