Error 17
Roborock Robot Vacuum
Severity:What Does This Error Mean?
Error 17 means the side brush motor stalled — almost always because hair or string is wrapped around the brush spindle.
Flip the robot over, unscrew the side brush, clear the wrap, reinstall.
Three minutes of work and the error goes away.
If you have pets or long hair in the household, expect to do this every few weeks.
Affected Models
- Roborock S7
- Roborock S8
- Roborock Q7 Max
- Roborock S5 Max
- Roborock S6 MaxV
Common Causes
- Hair or string wrapped tightly around the side brush spindle (most common)
- Side brush bristles bent or worn down — brush no longer rotates freely
- Side brush motor failed (uncommon, after years of use)
- Connector to the brush motor loose
- Brush installed on the wrong side or wrong way around
How to Fix It
-
Flip the robot and locate the side brush.
It's the small three-armed or Y-shaped brush at the front-right of the robot.
Held on by a single Phillips screw in the centre. -
Unscrew and lift off the brush.
Keep the screw in a safe place.
Once the brush is off, you'll see the spindle and the small motor underneath. -
Clear hair from the spindle.
Hair wraps around the spindle in a thick band — easy to spot once the brush is off.
Use scissors to cut through and pull it free.
Wipe the area with a dry cloth to clear residue. -
Inspect and replace if worn.
If the bristles are bent, broken, or visibly flattened, the brush is at end of life.
Roborock side brush replacements are $5–$12 from genuine or compatible third-party suppliers.
A worn brush triggers Error 17 more often even with a clean spindle. -
Reinstall and restart.
Drop the brush onto the spindle, screw it down, flip the robot upright.
Press Clean.
Error 17 should be gone immediately.
If it returns within minutes, the brush motor itself has failed and needs Roborock service.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean the side brush?
Every 2–4 weeks in normal use.
Weekly if you have pets that shed or long hair in the household.
Hair wraps quickly and Error 17 will return as soon as the next thick wrap forms — staying ahead of it prevents the error entirely.
What's the difference between Error 17 and Error 18 on a Roborock?
Error 17 is the side brush motor stalled — small brush at the front.
Error 18 is the main brush motor stalled — the larger roller brush underneath.
Both fix the same way (clear wrapped hair) but the location of the wrap is different.
Different parts of the robot, same kind of failure mode.
