Error 8

Roborock Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Roborock Error 8 means the robot cannot detect that the dustbin is installed. The bin sensor contacts are dirty, the bin is not fully seated, or the bin has been left out after emptying. Reinserting the bin firmly and cleaning the contacts fixes this almost every time.

Affected Models

  • Roborock S5
  • Roborock S6 MaxV
  • Roborock S7
  • Roborock Q5 Max
  • Roborock E4
  • Roborock S8

Common Causes

  • Dustbin not reinserted after emptying — the most common cause
  • Dustbin not pushed in far enough and not making contact with the bin sensor
  • Bin sensor contacts inside the robot dirty or coated with fine dust
  • Dustbin itself has a cracked housing or a bent contact tab
  • Bin sensor component has failed

How to Fix It

  1. Pull the dustbin out completely. If it was already out, this step confirms the starting state.

The dustbin is typically accessed from the top of the robot on Roborock models. Press the release button and lift it straight out.

  2. Empty the bin and clean the mesh filter if it is visibly clogged. Tap the filter gently over a bin to dislodge fine dust.

A clogged filter can sometimes prevent the bin from seating correctly and contributing to the error.

  3. Inspect the dustbin contacts — small metal tabs or pins on the side of the bin that touch the robot's sensor. Wipe them with a dry cloth.

Fine dust builds up on these contacts over time and breaks the electrical connection that tells the robot the bin is present.

  4. Wipe the corresponding contacts inside the robot's bin compartment with a dry cloth.

Both sides of the connection need to be clean. Even one dirty contact is enough to prevent detection.

  5. Reinsert the dustbin firmly until it clicks into place. Press the power button to restart — Error 8 should clear immediately.

If the bin feels like it seats correctly but Error 8 persists, try the bin from another position or test with a spare bin if available.

When to Call a Professional

Error 8 is almost always a maintenance issue. If a clean, correctly inserted bin still triggers Error 8, the bin detection sensor inside the robot has failed. Contact Roborock support.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I empty the Roborock dustbin?

Empty the dustbin after every 1–2 cleaning sessions, or whenever it is more than two-thirds full. Roborock's app shows a bin full notification on most models. Cleaning the filter weekly prevents fine dust from building up on the contacts.

Can Roborock run without the dustbin?

No — Error 8 prevents the robot from running without the dustbin fitted. This is a safety feature to prevent debris from being blown into the robot's motor and electronics.
