Error 19

iRobot Robot Vacuum

Severity:

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 19 means the battery is too low to start a cleaning job.
Set the Roomba on its dock and wait — most batteries take 2–3 hours from empty to full.
If the robot won't even initiate charging, that's Error 18, not 19.
Persistent Error 19 after a full charge means the battery has aged out and won't hold capacity.

Affected Models

  • Roomba i7
  • Roomba j7
  • Roomba s9
  • Roomba 980
  • Roomba 692

Common Causes

  • Battery deeply discharged (left off the dock for a long time)
  • Battery aged — won't hold full charge after 3+ years of use
  • Dock not properly connected, robot ran the battery dry
  • Cleaning schedule set to start at a time when battery is too low
  • Battery contacts oxidised (cleaning helps charge transfer)

How to Fix It

  1. Place the robot on the dock.

Dock the Roomba and check that the charging indicator shows it's charging.
You should hear a chime when contact is made.
Leave it for 2–3 hours minimum — the longer the better for a deeply discharged battery.

  2. Wait for full charge before testing.

Don't try to start a clean cycle as soon as the lights look like they've stopped flashing.
Modern Roombas show a solid indicator when fully charged.
Only start a cycle from a full state — Error 19 will return if the battery is at 30% when you press Clean.

  3. Run a short cleaning cycle to test.

Once fully charged, run a short clean (a single small room).
If the robot completes it normally and returns to dock, the battery is healthy.
If it shuts down partway with low battery, the battery is at end of life.

  4. Check battery age.

Open the iRobot HOME app and check the battery health under your robot's settings.
If it's reading below 80% capacity, you're seeing aged battery symptoms.
Roomba batteries are user-replaceable and cost $40–$80.

  5. Replace the battery if needed.

Flip the Roomba over, unscrew the battery cover (4–6 screws on most models), lift the old battery out, drop the new one in, refit the cover.
iRobot sells lithium-ion replacements that are direct fits.
Total time is about 10 minutes.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long do Roomba batteries last?

Three years of regular use is typical for the lithium-ion packs.
Less in heavy daily use, more if you only run the robot a few times a week.
Storing the Roomba off the dock for long periods accelerates aging — keep it on the charger when not in use.

Can I use a third-party replacement battery?

iRobot's are recommended for fit and capacity.
Quality third-party batteries do exist and run cheaper, but cell quality varies.
If you go third-party, look for Li-ion (not NiMH) packs from established brands with at least 100 reviews — and avoid no-name listings.
