Error 7
iRobot Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Roomba Error 7 means the spinning side brush has jammed and stopped rotating. Hair and thread wrap around the side brush axle over time and eventually stall the motor. Removing the brush and clearing the tangle almost always fixes it in under 5 minutes.
Affected Models
- Roomba 600 Series
- Roomba 700 Series
- Roomba 800 Series
- Roomba 900 Series
- Roomba i Series
Common Causes
- Hair or thread wrapped tightly around the side brush axle — the most common cause
- Carpet fibres or string tangled in the side brush arms themselves
- Side brush cap not seated correctly, forcing the motor to work against extra resistance
- Small hard object wedged between the side brush and the floor plate
- Side brush motor worn out after extended use
How to Fix It
-
Flip Roomba upside down. Locate the side brush — the small spinning multi-arm brush near the edge of the robot.
On most Roomba models the side brush is on the right side of the underside. It has three or five rubber-tipped arms.
-
Unscrew the side brush using a small Phillips screwdriver (or the yellow iRobot cleaning tool if you have it). Turn counterclockwise.
There is one screw in the centre of the brush. Do not lose it — it is small and easy to drop.
-
Lift the brush off and pull all hair and thread from the axle post underneath it. There is often a tight coil of hair wound around the shaft.
Use a small pick, tweezers, or scissors to cut through and remove wound hair. The coil can be surprisingly thick — remove every strand.
-
Check inside the axle hole in the floor plate for any hair that has worked its way into the motor shaft.
A toothpick or straightened paperclip can help pull hair out of the hole. Hair in the motor shaft causes Error 7 to return even after the brush is cleaned.
-
Reattach the side brush firmly and tighten the screw snugly (do not over-tighten). Flip Roomba over and press CLEAN.
If the screw is stripped or the brush arm is bent, replace the side brush — they cost a few dollars and are a standard consumable.
When to Call a Professional
Error 7 is almost always a maintenance issue, not a hardware failure. If Error 7 returns immediately after fitting a thoroughly-cleaned side brush, the side brush motor module needs replacing — this is an inexpensive and easy part to swap.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should I clean the Roomba side brush axle?
Clean the side brush and axle every 1–2 weeks in a pet or long-hair household. It is the quickest Roomba maintenance task — under 2 minutes — and prevents Error 7 from appearing.
Can Roomba run without the side brush fitted?
Roomba will run but will clean edges and corners much less effectively. The side brush sweeps debris from walls and corners into the path of the main brushes. For thorough cleaning, always keep the side brush fitted and maintained.
