Error 3
Shark Robot Vacuum
Severity: MinorWhat Does This Error Mean?
Error 3 means the brush roll has stopped turning.
The robot tried to spin it, the motor stalled or the encoder didn't see rotation, and the safety circuit cut out.
It's almost always a tangle: long hair, string, or carpet thread wrapped tight around the brush ends.
Flip the robot, pop the brush roll out, and clean it.
Five minutes of cleaning usually clears Error 3 for weeks.
Affected Models
- Shark ION Robot
- Shark IQ Robot
- Shark AI Ultra
- Shark RV1001
- Shark RV2001
Common Causes
- Hair or string wrapped around the brush roll ends (most common)
- Brush roll cap not seated correctly after a previous cleaning
- Brush motor failed
- Drive belt slipped (older models)
- Object jammed between brush and housing
How to Fix It
-
Power the robot off and flip it over.
Press the power button until the lights go off.
You don't want the brush trying to start while you're working on it.
Lay the robot upside down on a towel — protects both the robot and your floor. -
Remove the brush roll cover.
There's a plastic frame around the brush roll, usually held by two clips.
Squeeze the clips and the cover lifts off.
The brush roll itself comes out next — it sits in two end caps that lift away. -
Cut hair off the ends of the brush.
Hair winds around the bearing caps at each end of the brush.
Use scissors to slit the hair lengthwise along the brush, then pull it off in chunks.
Don't try to unwind it — cutting is faster and won't damage the bristles. -
Check the bearing caps.
The two end caps should rotate freely when you turn them by hand.
If one feels gritty or won't turn, hair is wedged inside.
Pull the cap off and clean the bearing — a small flat-blade screwdriver helps. -
Reinstall and test.
Slot the brush back into its end caps.
Make sure both caps are fully seated before clicking the cover back on.
A misaligned cap will cause Error 3 to come back the moment you press Clean.
Power on and run a short cycle to confirm.
Frequently Asked Questions
How often should the Shark brush roll be cleaned?
If you have long hair or a shedding pet, every two weeks is realistic.
Without those, every 4–6 weeks is fine.
The brush traps hair faster than the dust bin fills, so even if the bin still has space, the brush probably needs attention.
Can I run the robot without the brush roll?
On hard floors only, briefly.
The robot will work but it won't pick up dust or fibers as effectively.
Don't run it on carpet without the brush — the suction alone won't lift embedded debris.
Replace the brush roll first.
