Error 4

Shark Robot Vacuum

Severity: Minor

What Does This Error Mean?

Error 4 means the small spinning side brush at the front of the robot has stopped — usually because something is wrapped around its base.
Hair, string, and carpet threads love that brush because it sweeps them straight into the bearing.
Pop the brush off, clean the spindle, and reinstall.
Most Error 4 events clear in two minutes once you know where to look.

Affected Models

  • Shark ION Robot
  • Shark IQ Robot
  • Shark AI Ultra
  • Shark RV1001
  • Shark RV2001

Common Causes

  • Hair wrapped around the side brush spindle
  • String or thread tangled at the base of the brush
  • Side brush bent or damaged from collision
  • Brush installed without snapping fully into the spindle
  • Side brush motor failed (rare)

How to Fix It

  1. Flip the robot over.

Look for a single small star-shaped or three-pronged plastic brush at the front edge of the underside.
    That's the side brush.
It sweeps debris from along walls and corners toward the main suction inlet.

  2. Pull the side brush off.

Most Shark side brushes are held by a small Phillips screw or just snap-fit.
    Unscrew or pull straight up.
The brush should lift off the spindle cleanly.
If it's hard to pull, that's a sign hair is wrapped underneath.

  3. Clean hair off the spindle.

Now you can see the metal or plastic spindle that drives the brush.
Hair almost certainly is wrapped around it.
Cut it free with scissors or pull it off with tweezers.
The spindle should rotate freely with light finger pressure.

  4. Inspect the brush itself.

If the bristles are bent or splayed, the brush isn't doing much sweeping anyway.
Replacement side brushes cost a few dollars and come in packs of two.
Snap a new one on if yours is bent.

  5. Reinstall and test.

Snap or screw the brush back onto the spindle.
Make sure it's fully seated — a partially attached brush may spin freely without engaging the motor and Error 4 returns.
Set the robot down and press Clean.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should both side brushes be cleaned together?

Most Shark models only have one side brush.
Some newer models (AI Ultra series) have two — clean both at the same time.
It's the same procedure, repeated.

Why does Error 4 keep coming back?

If you've cleaned the brush and the error returns within minutes, the brush isn't snapping fully onto the spindle.
Try a new brush — they're inexpensive and the snap fit weakens after years of removal cycles.
If a new brush also fails, the spindle gear is worn and the motor assembly needs service.
