Error 018

Husqvarna Automower Robotic Lawn Mower

Severity: Moderate

What Does This Error Mean?

Husqvarna Automower Error 018 means the mower has crossed outside its defined boundary and is in an unrecognised area. The mower stops and waits for you. Carry it back inside the boundary, place it near the charging station, and press OK. Investigate what caused it to cross the boundary — usually a wire shifted, a break, or a gap in the boundary layout.

Affected Models

  • Husqvarna Automower 105
  • Husqvarna Automower 310E
  • Husqvarna Automower 315X
  • Husqvarna Automower 430XH
  • Husqvarna Automower 450XH
  • Husqvarna Automower 405X

Common Causes

  • Boundary wire has been cut, moved, or pulled loose by garden work or animals
  • Wire staple or peg has come out and the wire has shifted, creating a gap
  • Mower found an unguarded gap in the boundary layout — e.g. an open gate or a section where the wire runs too far from an edge
  • Strong interference has confused the boundary signal and the mower overshot
  • GPS drift (on GPS-equipped models) caused a map discrepancy

How to Fix It

  1. Carry the mower back inside the mowing area and place it near the charging station

The mower cannot navigate back on its own once outside the boundary. Carry it to a location clearly inside the boundary wire, on flat grass, near the charging station if possible. Do not place it on a hard surface or outside the lawn area.

  2. Enter PIN and press OK to clear the alarm

With the mower repositioned inside the boundary, enter your PIN and press OK. The mower should detect the boundary signal and resume normal operation. If it immediately shows the alarm again, the boundary wire in that area may be damaged.

  3. Walk the boundary wire and check for breaks or displaced sections

A common cause of Error 018 is a section of wire that has been moved or cut. Mow line, spades during gardening, and animals can all displace or sever the wire. Walk the entire boundary perimeter and look for wire that has surfaced, been displaced, or appears damaged.

  4. Use the Automower guide wire test if available on your model

Husqvarna controllers with a diagnostic menu include a boundary wire signal strength test. A low or fluctuating signal reading points to the section of wire with the problem. Refer to the Automower installation guide for how to run this test on your specific model.

  5. Repair any wire damage with a Husqvarna wire connector

If you find a break or cut, strip the ends of the wire, join them using a Husqvarna wire connector (available from dealers), and bury or peg the repaired section. Do not use standard electrical tape — it is not weatherproof and will fail.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can an open gate cause Error 018?

Yes. If your boundary wire does not account for a gate or opening in a fence, the mower can escape through the gap without crossing the wire. Either route the boundary wire through the gate opening to close the gap, or ensure the gate is always closed when the mower is running.

Error 018 keeps appearing even after I check the boundary — what next?

If the wire appears intact but Error 018 recurs, use the wire signal strength test in the controller menu to identify any weak signal sections. A wire that is intact but has a poor connection at a splice or the charging station can still cause boundary detection failures. Re-examine all wire connections and the charging station connection point.
